Sergent was born in Hampton, New Hampshire, in 1745, the son of Ebenezer Shaw and Anna Philbrick[1]
He was a farmer and cooper by trade, and also was a town selectman for some years. He was the first constable in Standish, Maine. He was living in Pearsontown (now Standish), Maine, in 1775, when the Revolutionary War broke out. He served as a Private under Capt. Stewart in Col. Phinny's Regiment for 11 weeks in 1775. [2]
