The Shell Sketch by Jacob's son John Henry Shell claims Jacob was born in 1752 in Montgomery County, Virginia. This would have been soon after his parents had moved from Pennsylvania. He was the eldest son, but probably had at least three older sisters.
The Valley of Virginia has records of Jacob, 'Jr.' serving with his father in Dunmore's War against the Shawnee in 1774.
Mary Kegley says Jacob, Jr. was jailed(in 'gaol') for an undetermined time on charges of abetting the loyalist cause during the Revolutionary War. However, he was later apparently exonerated as he shows up on militia lists during the latter part of the War.
Jr. married Mary 'Polly' Burk who was from a neighboring family of Scots-Irish descent. Jacob and Polly had five daughters and 3 sons--one named Jacob, Jr.(III). The youngest son was named Christian Bingaman--suggesting this may have been the family name of his grandmother Catherine. Christian did not marry because he was considered 'decrepit'.
Jacob, Jr. dabbled in land speculation like his father and Inherited most of his father's land on the horseshoe bend of the New River.
Jr. died 'of consumption' in 1811 at the age of 59.

Some interesting information on the Shell's is found in the Revoluationary War sections of the book: "Disaffection on the New River". In it is found that the Shells were among the Tory families in the New River valley. They were unwilling to take the "Oath of Allegiance to the State" and Jacob Shell, Jr. was considered one of the ringleaders and brought to trial. In his case, Jacob Shell Jr. and John Shell were required to sign a bond agreeing not to disturb the peace or take up arms as well as agreeing to obey the laws.
