William Shield of the parish of Somerby in the county of Leicester married Sarah Billings of the parish of Belton, Rutland, England at Saint Peter's Church, Belton by banns 20 Nov 1809.[1] They had at least 8 children:
These children were baptized at Saxby, Leicester, England between 1813 and 1828. Given William and Sarah married in late 1809, it's possible there are one or more older children who were baptized elsewhere.
William Shield was buried in Saxby 17 Jul 1829, just 39 years old.[2]
William's date at death would place his birth about 1790. His marriage record in 1809 says he is "of Somerby parish", however there are no Shield baptisms in Somerby around 1790. There *is* a set of baptisms for sons of Edward and Catharine (Swan) Shield in the 10 years after their marriage in 1806.
The mostly likely candidate baptismal record is for William, son of Henry and Elizabeth Shield, in Tilton on the Hill, Leicestershire, England 9 Aug 1789.[3] 9 children of Henry and Elizabeth are baptized there between 1775 and 1792, including a son Edward who is the right age to be the Edward who married Catharine Swan. However, no documents have been found as yet that explicitly connect William of Saxby to William of Tilton on the Hill.
