Biography

Alexander was born about 1684.

Alexander Sinclair was the eldest son of John Sinclair, eighth Earl of Caithness and Jean Carmichael of Hyndford.[1]

Alexander took his seat in Parliament in 1706 and voted against all the articles of the Treaty of Union discussed after December 1706.[2]

Alexander married Margaret Primrose, second daughter of the Earl of Roseberry, at Durham, on the 15th of February 1738.[2][3][4]

Alexander died at Hemer in Caithness on the 9th of December 1765. [2][4]

Research Notes

  • Alexander Sinklar appears to be the Alexander who married Agnes Strathearn at Kilsyth in 1710.

Sinclair Earl of Caithness-1 and Sinclair-1696 appear to represent the same person because: The 9th Earl of Caithness succeeded to the title in 1705. He had no sons. The 10th Earl was a William Sinclair. I think this profile was created in error for the 9th Earl and mistakenly shown as his son - see comment left at the profile of Sinclair Earl of Caithness-1
Alexander cannot be the son of the 9th Earl of Caithness and his wife Margaret nee Primrose - they had only one child, a daughter Dorothea per The Scots Peerage retrieved through archive.org https://archive.org/details/scotspeeragefoun02pauluoft/page/346/mode/1up?view=theater

IX. ALEXANDER, ninth Earl of Caithness, succeeded his father in 1705, took the oaths and his seat in Parliament 17 December 1706, while the Treaty of Union was before the House, and voted against all the articles of that Treaty, discussed subsequent to that date. His lordship possessed the title of Caithness sixty years, outliving every peer who had sat in the Scottish Parliament, and died at Hemer in Caithness, 9 December 1765, in the eighty-first year of his age. He married, at Durham, 15 February 1738, Margaret, second daughter of Archibald Primrose, first Earl of Rosebery, by Dorothea, daughter and heir of Everingham Cressy, Esquire of Birkin, co. York, and by her, who died at Hermitage, near Leith, 7 October 1785, had one child : Dorothea, born 4 April 1739, married, at Edinburgh, 5 June 1759, to James, second Earl Fife, without issue.

It is not clear - is this profile meant to be of the man who succeeded his father in 1705 - in which case it should be merged with Sinclair-1696

Or is it mean to be of the man who succeeded the ninth Earl? But he was a William Sinclair.

So I suspect this profile is meant to be the 9th Earl and a merger is needed.

Hi,

According to Balfour Paul, this gent had only one daughter, Dorothea. Going by their sources, the other children appear to be the children of Alexander and another spouse, by the name of Agnes Strathern, Strathern-71, who is not connected to him, as his spouse, and the children are duplicated on several occasions.

I agree that the Scot's Peerage has only one child for the ninth Earl of Caithness. From The Scots Peerage retrieved through archive.org https://archive.org/details/scotspeeragefoun02pauluoft/page/346/mode/1up?view=theater

A new father was recently added to this profile without source information or collaboration. I leave it to the profile manager to make changes as needed.

Sinclair-2066 and Sinclair-1696 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicates

Let's merge .

Thank you .
