Thomas was born in 1856[1] in Beverley, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of John Slater and Maria Ashby and was baptised on 17 September 1856 in Hutton Cranswick, Yorkshire.[2] The family lived in Skidby, Yorkshire, in 1871.[3]
At the time of the 1881 census, Thomas lodged with the Chapman family in Hull, Yorkshire. He worked as a railway platelayer.[4]
Thomas married Jane Ann Chapman in 1882.[5] The couple lived in Hook, Yorkshire, where Thomas was a railway signalman.[6][7][8]
Thomas died in 1941[9] in Wakefield, Yorkshire,[10] and was buried in Goole Cemetery, Goole.[11]
