Mary was born in 1861[1] in Arras, Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of John Slater and Maria Ashby; the family lived in Skidby, Yorkshire, in 1871.[2]
At the time of the 1881 census, Mary worked as a domestic servant for the Brigham family in Beverley, Yorkshire.[3]
