Biography

This profile is part of the Slaton Name Study.

Rachel's father Joseph is possibly found in Halifax County, VIrginia records, so she might have been born there or in any of the counties of "Southside" Virginia. Rachel married her cousin Thomas Slayden, a son of William Slayden, who was in turn a son of Daniel Slayden . According to the theory that her father Joseph Slayden is a son of Arthur Slayden, then this cousin would be a generation removed, as Thomas' father William Slayden, who married Nancy Shelton, was provably a grandson of Arthur by Daniel Slayden.

Her parents Joseph and Milley Slayden give consent to the marriage of their daughter Rachel to Thomas Slayden, 23, September 1800,[1] and Obediah Slayden posted bond with Thomas Slayden for the marriage on 29 September 1800, [2] this is undoubtedly her brother Obediah.

This cousin alignment issue led to a fundamental error in an otherwise very helpful collection of descendants by Arthur Jackson Slaton (AJS), [3] in an attempt to identify this couple as first cousins with no remove, referring to an SAR application by a descendant. In order to accommodate the claims of descendants, AJS gave Arthur the wrong son WIlliam, assigning him William Slayden who married Nancy Shelton instead of William Slayden who married Sarah Groom.

It is impossible for Thomas and Rachel to be first cousins with no remove unless Joseph is also a grandson instead of a son. They would necessarily be first cousins with one remove, if we accept that the Joseph who married Millie Everett is the son of Arthur Slayden. Using a counter-theory that the Joseph who married Millie is a grandson of Arthur Slayden, then they would indeed be first cousins, no remove.

Rachel appears with implied husband Thomas in 1850 Gibson County, Tennessee census, [4] and as a probable widow with son Travis E. in 1860 Humphreys County, Tennessee. [5]

She clearly lived beyond the 1858 death date shown in the online trees and the gedcom upload which was once the "source" for this profile. Please do not "improve" this profile with uncited middle names and other data from uncited sources.
