Biography

George Sneddon was born 6 Jan 1795 and baptized 11 Jan 1795 in Alloa, Scotland, the son of Joseph Snadon and Mary Hunter.[1][2]

George married his wife Isabella Scott in Dunfermline on 21 Sep 1822. At the time he was a collier (coal miner) residing in Berrielaw, Dunfermline.[3]

George Sneddon and Isabella Scott lived in Dunfermline and had at least 7 children, but only 4 lived to adulthood:

  1. Margaret Sneddon (1822 - <1828)
  2. Mary Sneddon (~1826 - 1893) m. Charles Sanders
  3. Margaret Sneddon (1828 - 1875) m. John Hutton
  4. Christina Sneddon (1830 - 1886) m. James McPherson
  5. Joseph Sneddon (1833 - )
  6. William Sneddon (1835 - 1836)
  7. Isabella Sneddon (1836 - 1838)

3 of his daughters' death records say his occupation was coal miner.

George Sneddon died 27 Aug 1837 and was buried two days later in Dunfermline at the age of 42, cause of death unknown. His occupation on the burial record was weaver. [4]

Research Notes

While the marriage record does not mention George's parents, they are named in the autobiography of George's nephew Joseph Snadden Hunter written in 1869. Joseph writes "George Snadon son of Joseph Snadon and Mary Hunter married Bell Scott had 3 daughters and one son, Mary, Margaret, Christie, and Joseph".[2]

George's 1837 burial record doesn't have a lot of identifying information, and the occupation (weaver) is different from his occupation on his childrens' death records (coal miner). But it very likely belongs to this George Sneddon because the age is similar (it says age 44), it is shortly after the birth of his youngest child, and in the 1841 census he is not listed with his wife and children. There appears to have been only one other George Sneddan living in Dunfermline around the same time (husband of Elizabeth Sneddon) but he had children after 1837 so the burial record is not for the other George Sneddon.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
