Charles Stevens, original owner of land obtained by Richard Fowler of Ann Arundel County: 100 acres “Kilkenny”(?), lying on east side of north branch of the Patuxent, new land “Steven’s Forrest” laid out for Charles Stevens – 2 September 1713 [14]

Steven's Forest is named for the 702-acre original land grant patented to Charles Stevens on May 10 1709. The tract was resurveyed on August 4, 1746, by Phillip Hammond. The tract was only 90 acres by 1783 when owned by Brice Hammond. In 1787 Charles Sterrett Ridgley combined "Browns Adventure", "Chew's Angle", "Stevens Forest" and "Cost upon Cost" to form a 1696-acre tract for the slave plantation of Oakland Manor. [15]

Robert, the third child of Adam and Lois Shipley, was married to Elizabeth Stevens, the daughter of Charles Stevens of Dorchester County. The name and family of Robert's wife are established by an indenture made by William Stevens, her brother, dated October 12, 1710. Robert, with his sisters, settled in that part of Anne Arundel County which is now a part of Howard County, and he became identified with Christ Church, Queen Caroline Parish, Howard County, Maryland, of which he was one of the first vestrymen and pewholders together with others of the family. His name frequently appears in the records of this parish. His churchmanship is recognized in Helen W. Ridgely's book, Historic Graves of Maryland and the District of Columbia, page 156. There are entries in the register of this historic parish of the following children with dates, which may represent either the time of birth or of baptism, most probably the latter. [16]

Peter Pinkson had property in Maryland before 1700. The earliest record of a Pinkston ‎(Pinkstone)‎ in America is a land warrant issued October 25, 1695, to Peter Pinkston 1 for 200 acres named Pinkston's Delight lying at Elk Ridge by a branch of the Pattuxent River in Anne Arundel County. Also, he received a land warrant on Feb 19, 1699 and a patent for another 180 acres he called Pinkstons Folly located on Rogue Harbors Branch Creek, near Sheldon Creek, adjoining William Ridgely's land. In 1735 he gave this land to his grandson William Inman. [17] Peter sold his plantation called Pinkston's Delight to Charles Stevens in 1702. ‎[18]

A Charles Stevens was the servant of Dr. Robert Hooper. On May 23, 1705 this Charles Stevens testified that Benjamin Celie's jail break in fall, 1704 was planned and instigated by Rachel Beard. [19]

Sarah Stevens, daughter of Charles Stevens, married Richard Barnes (Child Of Ketura (Roturah) Shipley And James Barnes). Richard Barnes was born about 1699. He died after 18 Oct 1751. He was married to Sarah STEVENS (daughter of Charles STEVENS) on 28 Jul 1716. Sarah STEVENS died before 1740. Richard BARNES and Sarah STEVENS had the following children:

Section II: Chronological

The codes in front of most names are invented to distinuish them from others and to link them to relatives.

Dates are guessed according to the following criteria:

  • Men marry at age 21, women at 18
  • Children are born 1 year after marriage and thereafter at 2 year intervals
  • Arrivals who are "transported" (fare paid by others) are age 20 and those who are "immigrants" (pay their own way) are age 30.
  • Land is acquired at age 30
  • Wills and other documents are witnessed at age 40
  • Wills are made at age 50

All guessed dates are preceded with a "G". If you take this material somewhere else, please replace the "G" with some other indication, like "say" which indicates it is a guess and not supported by documents. Every effort is made to replace guessed dates with real dates when possible. It is always a pleasure when the real date, when discovered, proves to be quite close to the guessed date!

Assume Florence married Edward's older brother, b. G1622, marriage date G1643, and John's guessed birthdate would be G1644.

If you would like to join in this study of Stevens/Stephens in Colonial Maryland -- the period 1634-1776 -- you are more than welcome. Send me a note and I'll add you to the trusted list!
