Plantations
In the early 1800s, John Lewis Kale Holzendorf (1775-1861) was the owner of Benceville Plantation in Camden County, Georgia, as well as the adjoining Berne Plantation. Benceville was later willed to his son, Louis (aka Lewis) Anderson Holzendorf (1817-1879), and Berne was willed to his son, Alexander Holzendorf (1808-1887).[1]
Berne Plantation was located north of Laurel Isle/Island, south of Benceville Plantation, which it adjoined, and east of Cona Plantation.[1]
Slave Owners
- John Lewis Kale Holzendorf (1775-1861), also owned Benceville Plantation, Camden County, Georgia
- Alexander Lafayette Holzendorf (1808-1887), inherited Berne Plantation in 1861.
- Virgil L. Hillyer from Ohio, purchased it in 1867, and set up a trade school for blacks.
