Biography

Birth

Barent was born, 10 Aug 1680, in Albany, Province of New York. He is a son of Joachim Staets and Annatje Barents. [1][2]

Property Transfer

August 2, 1692 Barent Staats is left property by a cousin and since he is under age it is transferred to his father for him. This same series of documents holds several references to primary sources on this early Staats family. A

Marriage

Barent Staats and Neeltje van den Berg were married, 15 Dec 1701, in the Albany Dutch Reformed Church. Dec. 15. With L. Barent Staats, y.m., b. in Col. R., and Neeltje Van den Berge, b. at N.A., both l. at N.A. [3][4][1]

He lived at Hoogheberg farm, Staats Island, Schodack, New York.

Death

Barent died and was buried, 26 July 1752, in Staats Island Cemetery, Schodack. Rensselaer County, New York. [1][2] His will was proved January 11, 1752. Witnesses, Jacob van Schayck, Killian Van Rensselaer, Sybrant van Schayck. Proved, in Albany, September 25, 1752

Will:

[Original in Dutch] -In den Name Godes, Amen, January 1, 1748, I, Barent Staats, I leave to my son, Joachim, my Great silver tankard, for his right of primogeniture. I also give my Bowery in the Manor of Rensselaerwyck, known by the name of Hoge Berg (Great Hill), with the meadow and upland thereto belonging, to my two sons, Joachim and Gerritt, but on the express condition that my wife Neeltie shall have her support and living during her life, and the use of certain slaves. I leave to my sons all my wearing apparell, and my guns and pistols; I also leave to them 1/2 of my right in the Patent of Loonenburgh. I leave to my seven daughters, Antie, wife of John Visser, Aryantie, wife of Hendrick Van Dursen, Catharine, wife of Abraham Schuyler, Gertrude, wife of John Schuyler, Neeltie, wife of Samuel Staats, Teuntie, wife of William Salisbury, and Elizabeth, wife of Johanes Bleecker, all the other 1/2 of my right in the Patent of Loonenburgh. I make my wife and my sons, Johanes and Gerritt, executors. Witnesses, Jacob Van Schayck, Killian Van Rensselaer, Sybrant Van Schayck. Proved, in Albany, September 25, 1752. Link to Will
