Biography

Birth
John, the son of Richard Stamp and his wife Mary, née Twidale, who had been married at Burton upon Stather, Lincolnshire, on 20 May 1806,[1][2] was born at Horkstow, Lincolnshire, about 1811. See Research Notes

Marriage
John married Rebekah Cotsworth by banns at All Saints church, Winteringham, Lincolnshire, on 28 June 1832. John was described as a Bachelor of the Parish of Horkstow. Witnesses were Ann Stamp and William Reynolds.[3][4]

Children
John and Rebekah settled in Alkborough, Lincolnshire, and had children:

  1. Mary, born at Alkborough in 1833 and baptized at St John the Baptist church, Alkborough, on 20 October 1833.[5][6]
  2. Richard, born at Alkborough in 1836 and baptized at St John the Baptist church, Alkborough, on 26 June 1836.[7][8] Richard died when he was two years old.[9]
  3. Richard William, born at Alkborough in 1838[10] and baptized at St John the Baptist church, Alkborough, on 17 June 1838.[11][12]
  4. Walker, born at Alkborough in 1840[13] and baptized at St John the Baptist church, Alkborough, on 8 March 1840.[14][15]
  5. Twidale, born at Alkborough in 1842[16] and baptized at St John the Baptist church, Alkborough, on 9 March 1842.[17][18]
  6. John, born at Alkborough in 1845[19] and baptized at St John the Baptist church, Alborough, on 2 November 1845.[20][21]

The 6 June 1841 census records John living at Alkborough with his wife Rebecca, their children Mary, Richard, and Walker, and his step children Robert and Hannah. John was an agricultural labourer.[22]

The 7 April 1861 census records John and his wife Rebecca living at Main Street, Alkborough, with no children at home.[24]

Wife's Death and Burial
John's wife Rebecca died at Alkborough on 19 June 1870[25][26] and was buried at Alkborough on 21 June 1870.[27][28]

Second Marriage
Later that year John remarried to a much younger Jane Balderson after banns at the church of St John the Baptist, Alborough, on 10 October 1870. John was described as a widower, aged 60, occupation Labourer, resident at Alkborough, son of Richard Stamp, Labourer. Witnesses were Thomas Barley and Mary Balderson.[29][30]

The 2 April 1871 census records John living with his new wife Jane at Alkborough.[31]

Death and Burial
John died at Alkborough in 1874[32] and was buried at Alkborough on 9 March 1874.[33][34]

Research Notes

Parentage
While the records are consistent in asserting that John was born at Horkstow about 1810, I have been unable to find a baptism record, or any information on who his parents might be.

The names of his two sons, namely Walker and Twidale, are suggestive of a connection to John Twidell and his wife Jane Walker. John and Jane were the parents of Mary Twidale who married Richard Stamp. Richard and Mary were having children at Horkstow over the period 1807 to 1824, and so would appear to be excellent candidates. They did not have a known son called John. However, I have found no baptism record, nor, indeed, any gaps in the children's birth years when John might have been born.

Another consideration is that John Stamp and his wife Sarah were also having children at Horkstow about 1810. I know almost nothing about them at the moment.

Returning to the John of this profile, since he remarried in 1870, his marriage certificate should name his father. The certificate is not immediately available online, therefore I ordered it from the UK GRO. It confirms a) his age of 60, and b) his father as Richard Stamp. Therefore, I will add John as a son of Richard and Mary.
