Research Notes

J. D. Warfield in 1908 started a myth that has been recopied and perpetuated on many trees since that time. He stated:

"In 1696, Colonel Henry Ridgely married Mary (Stanton) Duvall, widow of Mareen Duvall, the Huguenot, and with her administered on Duvall's estate." [2]

"After the death of Col. Ridgely, in 1710... Mrs. Mary Ridgely next appears as the wife of Rev. Jacob Henderson, the English rector sent over to visit the churches of the province. Mr. and Mrs. Henderson left an enduring monument to their memory by the erection, in 1735, of Holy Trinity Chapel. Having endowed the same, they left it as a memorial to the public, and by act of the General Assembly, it was converted into a "chapel of Ease." There is a marble slab in the vestibule, stating the fact of its erection at the cost of Mr. and Mrs. Henderson. There are also a number of memorial windows erected in it to the Duvalls, Mullikins, Bowies and others. The will of Mrs. Henderson, at Upper Marlborough, shows that she had a brother in Philadelphia, and that her maiden name was Mary Stanton..." [3]

Warfield was more of an historian than a genealogist, and those statements are incorrect, as shown by records being more accessible today. His error comes from the fact that Jacob Henderson had two wives named Mary, which Warfield combined into one person.

Mary, maiden name unknown, was born about 1670 and married:
1. Mareen Duvall before 1694 when he wrote his will
2. Henry Ridgely from 1694 to 1696
3. Jacob Henderson as his first wife
She died on 19 January 1735 in Queen Anne Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland.

She is not Mary Stanton as listed by Warfield. Mary Stanton married:
1. Mr. Dodd
2. in 1718 to Robert Tyler
3. in 1740 to Jacob Henderson as his second wife
Mary Stanton died 1761-1762 in Prince George's County when her will was written and probated.

Because Jacob Henderson married both women named Mary, Warfield confused his second wife Mary (nee Stanton) with his first wife Mary, maiden name unknown and had Mary Stanton incorrectly as the person who married Mareen Duvall and Henry Ridgely.

The account of Mareen Duvall was filed on 9 February 1696 by "Henry Ridgley who intermarryed with Mary the Execux. of Mareen Duvall."[4] As Mareen Duvall named his wife Mary as his executrix, that document provides proof of her first two marriages.

Proof of Mary's marriage to Jacob Henderson is found a deed on 28 February 1733 when Jacob Henderson of Prince George's County, Clark [Clerk] & Mary his wife lately called Mary Ridgeley the Widow of Coll. Henry Ridgley late of Prince George's County deceased sold a tract to Benjamin Jacob.[5]

The marriage of "Revd. Jacob Henderson & Mrs. Mary Tyler" was on 2 November 1740 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County.[6]

Mary Henderson's full will is also available.[8] The above marriage and will prove that it is Jacob Henderson's second wife, the widow Tyler, who was Mary Stanton.

Mary Stanton's second husband was Robert Tyler. On 10 June 1718 "Mr. Robt. Tyler & Madm. Mary Dodd were married per Mr, Jacob Henderson" [9] [her future husband 22 years later.] Robert Tyler wrote his will on 29 December 1735 in Prince George's County and it was proved on 24 August 1738. Among others, he named his wide Mary.[10]

From Wikipedia:
"In 1713, Col. Ridgley's widow, Mary (née Duvall, née Stanton, and who would later become Henderson's wife) built a chapel on her own land near her residence. On December 17, 1717, Reverend Jacob Henderson was appointed as rector of Queen Anne Parish. About that time he acquired numerous parcels of property through his marriage to the twice widowed, Mary Ridgely. In 1737, Henderson gave 4 acres (16,000 m2) of land for the use of Queen Anne's Parish called "the Glebe whereon there is a Chapple now standing." That chapel had been built for the convenience of northern part of the parish and was known as Henderson's Chapel or Forest Chapel. Almost 100 years later, in 1836 Henderson's Chapel became an independent congregation, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Henderson died on August 27, 1751 after 34 years of service at St. Barnabas. [Further sources cited on the Wikipedia page linked above].
Wikipedia[11] gives her name as Mary Stanton, however, according to this source "We do not know the identity of his [Mareen Duvall's] last wife who is often incorrectly given as Mary Stanton.[12]

Robert Tyler married Mary Dodd Stanton as his second wife. There were no children from this marriage. She later married Rev. Jacob Henderson Source: Juanita Kellerman 1973 Garnett Ks.

Stanton-432 and Stanton-12 appear to represent the same person because: I took over an abandoned duplicate in 432, and have added sources to 12. They are the same person and should be merged.

Suggested edit: Mary Stanton did not marry Mareen Duvall and Henry Ridgely. That is a different Mary. The two Marys have been confused because they both married Jacob Henderson. Please delete Stanton as the maiden name of this profile.

This Mary: married 1. Mareen Duvall married 2. Henry Ridgely married 3 Jacob Henderson as his first wife. She died in 1735.

For Mary Stanton She married 1. Mr. Dodd She married 2. in 1718 to Robert Tyler She married 3. in 1740 to Jacob Henderson as his second wife She died 1761-1762 in Prince George's County when her will was written and probated.

An abstract of her will which shows that Mary Stanton is the wife of Jacob Henderson who died inn 1762 and named her brother Daniel Stanton. HENDERSON, MARY, Prince George's Co., widow of Rev. This person is NOT Mary Stanton. The confusion comes from the fact that Jacob Henderson had two wives named Mary. The first was this Mary (maiden name unknown, but the widow of Mareen Duvall then Henry Ridgely.
