Biography

Burleigh Roscoe was born in 1899. He was the son of Warren Staples and Charlotte Ann Stanley. Burleigh Roscoe Staples was born on 12 January 1899 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. Birth attended by Dr. H. W. Small. According to Dr. Small's 'Record of First One Hundred cases of Midwifery" from May of 1891 to September 1899 in a ledger on pages 290 - 296, Dr. Small stated that Lottie was in labor 8 hours with Burleigh. Dr Small administered ether. Burleigh weighed 10 pounds. Small has the year as 1898, after an 1899 entry. Ether administered to mother. He died on 29 May 1977 at the age of 78 in South Bristol, Lincoln County, Maine, USA.

South Bristol: Burleigh R. Staples, 78, died Sunday at his home after a long illness. He was born on Swan's Island, Jan. 12, 1899, the son of Warren and Charlotte Stanley Staples. He moved from Swan's Island to Bath in 1940 and then from Bath to South Bristol in 1946.He operated Staples General Store here for 41 years, selling the store in 1969. He was also a lobster fisherman, retiring in 1972. Mr. Staples was a member of the Union Church, the Pagonia Chapter of the Eastern Star and served as master of Anchor Lodge AF & AM.

He leaves his wife Myrtle (Johnson) Staples of South Bristol; two daughters, Mrs. Elinor Donahue of South Bristol and Mrs. Verna Parker of Lima, Peru; a sister, Mrs. Cora Page of Edgecomb; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Burleigh was buried in West Bristol cemetery, Walpole. Burleigh and Myrtle owned a store on Store Point.


Burleigh Roscoe Staples and Myrtle Florence Johnson were married on 30 December 1919 in Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, USA. Myrtle Florence Johnson, daughter of Frederick Norton Johnson and Julia Etta Smith, was born on 19 August 1896 in Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine, USA. Birth date also reported as May 8, 1897. She died on 20 March 1988 at the age of 91 in South Bristol, Lincoln County, Maine, USA. She was buried in West Bristol cemetery, Walpole.

Burleigh Roscoe Staples and Myrtle Florence Johnson had the following children:
