Was born in New York State between 1807 and 1910, to unknown parents. There have been efforts to name her family of origin, but to date, it remains a matter of unsupported claim with only the vaguest referenced details. The best that can be proposed, is that at some point prior to the February 1827 birth of the Hallock's first-born (James Degroat Hallock), presumably either in the Township of St. Vincent, in Grey County, or Elizabethtown in Kitley Leeds, ANNA STEVENSON married WILLIAM B. HALLOCK. All of their children were born in Ontario and in 1849, William Hallock relocated his family to the Wisconsin County of Dodge, and Township of Hubbard.
The matter of when, and where, she deceased is of importance.

HALLOCK, ANNA (1807 - 25 September 1883)
HALLOCK ~
At Bath, Brown County, Dakota
September 25th
Mrs. Anna Hallock, aged 76 years
Deceased was for many years a resident of the Town of Loyal, having moved, with her husband, into the town about twenty years ago.
About two years ago she removed to Dakota with her son, W. J. Hallock, with whom she resided up to the time of her death.
Her remains were brought back to this County by her son, arriving in Neillsville, on Saturday, September 29, and on Monday were laid at rest, besides those of her husband, in the cemetery at Windfall ".
Clark County, Wisconsin History -- Obituaries
There are seemingly two "Contested" matters pertaining to the correct and accurate identification of Anna Hallock, wife of William B. Hallock that deserves attention
MAIDEN NAME and any details regarding a Family Of Origin
DEATH (Place and Date) and where Anna was residing i.e., in 'Who's' household at the time of death, and how long had she been there?
A somewhat unusual query but one justified by the cited formal document Filed 1933 (a,k.a. the Draper Affidavit) Contesting in full the published account of Anna's residency, on September 25, 1883, upon the event of her death. Though not sufficiently cited for review and confirmation of detail - the Affidavit would be expressly aimed at the above Obituary Notice, in effect rendering it untrue and inaccurate. However, it would be so easy to become lost (again) in the weeds of virtual non-information in hope of discerning what the purported conflict was originally, I am more than satisfied to accept at face and detail value the Obituary that she died in the household of her son: William J Hallock, at Bath Township, Brown County, South Dakota.
Regarding Name
Considering the stark absence of information per to parentage and ancestry - the otherwise minor matter of spelling becomes a primary concern if serious future efforts are undertaken for the discovery of her Family Of Origin.
Are there any known early examples exhibiting her maiden name?
Can those examples be cited as sources?
The Following content references or makes an explicit familial claim to Anna Stevenson Hallock.
I'm showing these examples because they demonstrate how Anna's own children preferred spelling for their mother's maiden name.
Following entries not in complete sequential chronological order:
The issue of Anna's maiden name has taken so much coverage because, the mere action of altering the spelling from "Stevenson" to "Stephenson" has been premised cause for doubting her identity. As should be noted at this point, the preferred spelling was 'Stevenson'.

The format is a bit misleading..... actually, the Family Researcher with the Wisconsin Genealogical Society makes clear she had no information on Anna's maiden name or Family of Origin!
In fact the above shown names are the result of a subsequent printed "Plea" in which she asked her readers for said information.

After the Macks came three brothers Ed, Jerrod and Sam Smith. Ed. Smith cleared about thirty acres of land, when he lost his wife, and then moved westward. Of the other brothers, all traces have been lost.
Then came the Honeywells, Kings and others, who settled south of the Macks. The Honeywells, however, soon left there and located in what is now Greenwood, later going on to Minnesota. In 1861 William Hallock and Eben Borden arrived

William B. Hallock of Iron Ridge, Dodge Co. WI his wife was Anna_________ (1808-1883)
These Hallocks lived for a time at Meaford, Ont. Canada where they married and five children were born.
WI Census gives William’s birthplace as Canada and Anna’s as New York State. He died at Loyal, WI 1875 and she died at Bath, Dakota 1883
Who were William B’s parents? And what was the maiden name of Anna?
Reply in the same magazine.
“My request for data about Mr. and Mrs. Wm. B. Hallock of Iron Ridge, WI and Loyal WI. has brought me conflicting statements about the maiden name of Anna, the wife.
Mrs. Marian Cooke of Loyal says that Mrs. Hallock was Anna Near
Mr. Ben S. Hallock of chili, WI., believes that her name was Anna De Groot and the death certificate of one of her daughters gives the mother’s name as Anna Stephenson
Both Mrs. Cooke and Mr. Hallock are grandchildren of Anna and the above-mentioned death record was made out by another grandchild.
Which name is correct? Is it probable that Mrs. Anna Hallock had been married before and that one or two of the suggested names were of other husbands?
February 1994 – Anna’s maiden name was "Stephenson" .
The Stephenson’s lived near the Hallock’s in Meaford. William’s father was Rev. William Hallock who married Catherine De Groat
Census records give birthplace for both parents as New York. Another son shows Connecticut. He (William) was a blacksmith and apparently moved from Meaford to Iron Ridge, Dodge County, WI where they were mining and smelting Hematite, producing 5 tons of pig iron a day which sold for $26.00 a ton in 1849.
Meaford probably is not correct as the area was not settled until circa 1830.
He was one of the organizers of Loyal Township, in 1865

The fact is, the previous “Household” inventory took place with the 1870 U.S. Census….a lot can transpire in the space of ten years!
