Research Notes

We do not know much about this person. I have run into unsubstantiated claims that he is the father of the John Stone born abt. 1802 in Georgia, that John marrying Orra Janet Orr (b. 1815 Ga.) and eventually settling in East Texas, with son Sylvannus Gibson Stone continuing the East Texas Stone line.

In 1832 Georgia conducted a land lottery to distribute the last parcel of land "ceded by the Indians" (the Cherokees, whose exit became the infamous "Trail of Tears"). Any Georgia citizens who met certain qualifications and had registered in their counties were eligible, their names and the number of the particular land lot were drawn from separate drums. The Georgia Archives in Morrow maintain the records of the drawings, but I was able to view the 1832 results at US GenWeb Archives (link below) and found: "FIFTH DISTRICT, SECOND SECTION, Gilmer 269 Joshua Stone's minors, 38th, Scriven." It is unclear whether Joshua Stone was still alive or in Georgia at the time or if he is the Joshua Stone of this profile, but I am pursuing that lead (because this indicates that a Joshua Stone had been a citizen of Georgia prior to 1832 and had children there).

While there is no evidence that Joshua Stone was of my Stone line, I do have evidence that he was not the father of John Stone (1802-1854, Georgia). John Stone, b. 1802, Wilkes Co, GA was named in the will of James Stone (1763-1815) of Wilkes Co, Georgia. James' wife was Joanna Jones. They were married in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. James was son of John Stone and Mildred/Millender Wynn. John died in Wilkes County, GA in 1805, naming his 3 children: James Stone, Elizabeth Cunningham (wife of Ansel Cunningham), and Ann Stovall (wife of Drury Stovall). John's father was John Stone of Mecklenburg Co, VA, d. 1782 leaving a will which named all of his children, among them John and Eusebius. Eusebius, d. 1803 in Mecklenburg, leaving a portion of his estate to his brothers and sisters. When John dies, an "Agreement of Heirs" is executed in Wilkes County, GA pertaining to the estate of Eusebius Stone, between James Stone, Ansel Cunningham and his wife Elizabeth, and Drury Stovall and his wife Ann. See below for transcription of wills (John 'SR', John 'Jr', and Eusebius). The will of James Stone is in the comment below.

It says right in the biography of Stone-11396 that he married Mary Hoskins, the daughter of William Hoskins, which matches the information on Stone-4734. One profile says he was born in Essex, Virginia, the other says Pittsylvania, Virginia, so put one in the data section, and mention the other location in the biography. Stone -4734 says he died 10 July 1824, but has no sources to document that date. Stone-11396 provides several sources documenting his 1822 death, so that should be used. I don't understand why you think these are profiles for two different men. I've proposed the merge again. Please complete it. Thanks!

Thanks (Kelly) for the DAR link. I will evaluate soon (I did glance at it just now and it certainly appears to be the JS who married Mary Hoskins. DAR lists Dolley, Thomas and Joshua as children of this JS and I don't know if that is complete or how it relates to the line I am pursuing. I wish the Stones had not been so fond of the name Joshua (there is a good measure of Joshua's, pressed down and running over as it were, paraphrasing Luke).

1. I doubt that Joshua III being 58 (if he was born 1744 of Capt Joshua Stone II and Wilmoth Bryant) in 1802 when John Stone was reportedly born in Ga. would be a major hurdle. More problematic would be his wife, Mary Hoskins b. abt. 1751 in Va., would be 51 at John's birth, which would be pushing what was possible back then (and even now to some degree). However, I have Mary dying abt. 1802, which would imply death in childbirth. On the other hand she may have died in Madison Co, Ky. However, though we know John Stone and Orra were from Ga., possibly John was born in Ky. The information is just too sketchy now. As for knowing that Johsua III "never lived in Ga.", I don't think we know that at all, since we don't know much of anything about Joshua III.

Hi Gary,

The main problem with this connection is that Joshua would have been 58 when John was born and Joshua never lived in Georgia where John was born.
