Captain Joshua Stone (1744-1822) is thought to be the son of Joshua Stone of Richmond County whose will was proven Feb 15, 1774, naming sons Joshua, Benjamin, Thomas and James, and grandson Thomas Stone son of William Stone, deceased. Joshua Stone of Richmond County was the son of William Stone of Richmond County, whose will was proven Jan 13, 1707, in which he named sons Joshua and Philip,son-in-law Robert Schofield and grandson John Glascock. Joshua Stone of Pittsylvania was a surveyor, and he also served as Justice of the peace and Sheriff of the county; he married July 1769, Mary Hoskins, a daughter of William Hoskins of Halifax County, and lived in the eastern part of the County near the Halifax line. His will was proven May 20, 1822, in which he named sons William H., Thomas C., Coleman, Samuel, Clack, Joshua, and John Stone: daughter Polly Terry , the wife of Nathaniel Terry , and daughter D. C. Harrison of Tennessee and her four youngest children, Nancy P. Harrison, Coley, Answorth and Clack Harrison. [1]
Joshua Stone was a Captain in the Southern Continental Army (1780), Justice of the Peace for Pittsylvania County, VA in 1783, as well as Sheriff for the same county in 1796.[2]
Joshua Stone Captain of Virginia Militia, Revolutionary War, severed under General Nathaniel Green who assumed command of the Southern Continental Army in the Autumn of 1780.[3]
We do not know much about this person. I have run into unsubstantiated claims that he is the father of the John Stone born abt. 1802 in Georgia, that John marrying Orra Janet Orr (b. 1815 Ga.) and eventually settling in East Texas, with son Sylvannus Gibson Stone continuing the East Texas Stone line.
In 1832 Georgia conducted a land lottery to distribute the last parcel of land "ceded by the Indians" (the Cherokees, whose exit became the infamous "Trail of Tears"). Any Georgia citizens who met certain qualifications and had registered in their counties were eligible, their names and the number of the particular land lot were drawn from separate drums. The Georgia Archives in Morrow maintain the records of the drawings, but I was able to view the 1832 results at US GenWeb Archives (link below) and found: "FIFTH DISTRICT, SECOND SECTION, Gilmer 269 Joshua Stone's minors, 38th, Scriven." It is unclear whether Joshua Stone was still alive or in Georgia at the time or if he is the Joshua Stone of this profile, but I am pursuing that lead (because this indicates that a Joshua Stone had been a citizen of Georgia prior to 1832 and had children there).
WikiTree profile for "Joshua Stone Jr" 1717 - abt. 1822 aka Capt. Joshua Stone, Jr. b. Richmond Co. Va. lists Joshua Stone III born 13 Oct. 1744 in Richmond Co. Va as a child of Joshua Stone and Wilmoth Bryant.
entry number 38 gives Joshua Stone III born 13 Oct 1744 at Pittsylvania Co., Va, married Mary Polly Hoskins daughter of William Hoskins. Died 1822 Madison Co., Ky. Entry #85 at the site lists John Stone b. 1802 d. 1854 as one of the children of Joshua Stone III.
Digitized Jan 7, 2008 by Google from University of Wisconsin - Madison copy. The book relates John Stone to a Joshua Stone who may be this Joshua Stone , p. 35 among others. I don't have a copy of this book and am going by only snippets I can obtain via Google, the book still being under copyright.

The main problem with this connection is that Joshua would have been 58 when John was born and Joshua never lived in Georgia where John was born.
