David Stoops, son of Robert and Catherine (Strum) Stoops, was born on 20 Oct. 1770 in Pennsylvania per the census of 1850.[1]
He married Abigail Williams, daughter of Thomas W. Williams, on 15 Jan. 1795 at Rockbridge County, Virginia.[2]
David first moved his family into Kentucky where his eldest children were born.[3] He is thought to have moved North, crossing the Ohio River into Knox County in Indiana Territory about 1803. His name appeared on an 1805 petition of landowners who had settled, or planned to settle, in the new territory West of the Ohio River. Local lore claims David built one of the first cabins in what became, in 1811, Franklin County, Indiana. This seemed to be apparent as his name appears on an 1811 list of taxpayers in Franklin County and his household was enumerated in the town of Brookville in Franklin County during the 1820 census.
After the death of Abigail, he married Elizabeth Speaks in 1825.[1] David moved his family to Marion County, Indiana prior to 1830 where his household was enumerated during the census of 1830 and 1840.
David moved once again to Marchall County, Indiana in 1847. His household was last enumerated during the census of 1850. He died on 21 March 1854 at Marshall County, Indiana and was buried at McDonald Cemetery, Rutland, Marshall County, Indiana, [1]
