William was the son of John Stratford and Christian Howell. [1]
His first wife is said to be Joyce de la Motte, daughter of Richard. The Visitation of Gloucester names the children of William and Joyce as being:
His second wife was Ann Walwyn. [2] Their marriage was also referenced by Ann's brother John Walwyn, in his will of 1587 "my sister's son Ferdinando Stratford and to Judith Stratford his sister." [3] These two children are also attributed to Ann Walwyn in the Visitation of Gloucester.
William and Ann were responsible for building the Wythall Manor House at Walford, Herefordshire. It has remained a rare and fine example of Tudor architecture. [4] William eventually settled this estate on his son Ferdinando. [5]
His will was drawn up on 8 Mar 1569/70. He described himself as William Stratford of Temple Guiting. [6] He made bequests to:
Probate of his will was granted on 27 May 1570. [7]
William and Ann were buried in the Chapel of St Faith at Farmcote, Gloucestershire, now abandoned. There is a monument there to their memory.
William and his two wives appear twice in the Visitation of Gloucester. His position on pg 156 is correct; his position as a son of Richard on pg 157 is incorrect. [8]
