Adam Stuart was born about 1761 in Orange County, NC, the second son and third child of Samuel (1714-1824) and Jane Dickey Stuart (1735-1810). Some time after the American Revolution he moved to Darlington District, SC, and married three times, first to Sarah Jane Mills, secondly to Mrs. Jane Hawthorn McDowell, and thirdly to Mrs. Margaret Frierson Frierson, a widow of her cousin James Edward Frierson, Jr. (1756?-1829).
