  • There is no record of his baptism at ODC Sleepy Hollow. The translated and rewritten records for the ODC indicate that the Church and its records were in a poor state between about 1774 and 1781. The Revolutionary war was in progress and life in these parts was in turmoil. Peter/Petrus, the Subjects father was involved in the war as was his eldest son Peter/Petrus b 1762 and other family members
  • Record found at "Find a Grave Index, 1600's - current " to an entry for Levi Sypher, son of John Sypher/Seypher 1777 - 1839 and Hanna Unknown. Levi shown as b March 31,1808, d Jan 3, 1859, spouse Sarah Cypher children George W Cypher, John Smith Cypher and Edward Cypher.
  • Note that American Spelling practices began to apply after about 1880 following the Revolutionary war and loss of English influence. The letter "C" was rarely used in the Dutch language and the family name was commonly spelled with an "S" when written in Dutch or English but use of letter "C" became common after 1800 and as Dutch records were translated after 1800. Accordingly Syffer, Sypher, Seypher, Siffer and Cypher are all common spellings for this family.
