Biography
Bob became interested in genealogy by reading a hand written family tree prepared by his Aunt Clora Taliaferro. Clora was unique in the family in that she visited her father's parents, David and Chloa Taliaferro in Brownsville, TN. Years later, Bob had an opportunity to visit the property together with his great uncle Willie Taliaferro. The advent of MyHeritage.com allowed Bob to begin putting the family tree on line and comparing it to existing data sources. Very exciting to find out, for example, his Grandfather's German relatives, which of his relatives registered for the Draft in WWI, and whom among his relatives are veterans of the Civil War. Cross referencing the Taliaferro tree with WikiTree, Family Search and Find a Grave information has also been tremendously helpful. It is always intriguing when the unknown remains unknown, like not knowing (yet) where his great Grandfather David C. Taliaferro buried.

I just created a profile for our NOTABLE cousin Mike [Taliaferro-1121]. AFC and NFL quarterback.
Mike Taliaferro and Joe Namath were both starting quarterbacks for New York Jets in 1965. And 1965 was Joe Namath's first season in the AFC with the New York Jets.
A lot of Mike [Taliaferro-1121]'s grandparents are from right here in Amherst County, Virginnia.

For many years -- more than I want to acknowledge -- I have been working on a book about the Proctor/Chavous family and their sojourns from Virginia and North Carolina, to Ohio, to Haiti -- on the very eve of the Civil War -- and then back to North America. I noticed on WikiTree that you are a descendant/relative of William Proctor, who was shot either by Union soldiers or marauding white civilians in 1862 in Oxford, Ohio. Proctor had emigrated to Oxford from NC/VA, and was a highly skilled and respected smith and mechanic. I was wondering if you have any information about his parents and his first family. The records that I have about his spouse, Nancy East, and their children are pretty good. But the origins of William Proctor have remained elusive. His closest relatives in NC and VA, who settled there after the American Revolution, came from an extended family of mixed-race persons in Charles County, Maryland: African, European, and Native. Just so you know: I taught African American and US History at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver for 30 years and before that I actually worked for a living as a newspaper editor, columnist, and reporter in Massachusetts, Philadelphia, Mississippi, and North Carolina.
BTW: are you by any chance related to Ray Taliaferro, the late, great broadcaster from radio station KGO in San Francisco? I used to listen to him every night....
