Biography

Jacob Tyssen was born in the Netherlands,^[1] probably in Kampen, Overijssel. His father was named Mattys; his patronymic has not been determined, but in New Netherland he was called Mattys van der Heyden.

Jacob registered as a poorter (burgher or privileged citizen) in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands on 26 April 1638. The registration gives his name as Jacob Thijsz and describes him as a tailor from Campen.^[2]

He was married to Elsje Gerrits, his first wife, in Amsterdam in 1637. Their marriage banns were published on 25 July 1637. She had been married before; her previous husband was named Harman Janssen Heimerich. ^[3] Elsje Gerrits died, and on 18 November 1645 marriage banns were published in Amsterdam for Jacob Thijsen, widower of Elsje Gerrits, and Stijntje Claes de Witt.^[4] No records have been found of children from either of these marriages.

Jacob is mentioned in New Netherland records in 1653, when Jacob Tys van Heide was identified as a private in the Burgher Militia Corps of New Amsterdam.^[5][1] In that same year he purchased and later sold a lot on Broadway in New Amsterdam.^[1]

Some time thereafter, he returned to the Netherlands, where he married Anna Hals in Amsterdam on 25 July 1655.^[1] Marriage bans were published in Amsterdam on 10 July 1655. The document describes Jacob as the widower of Elsje Gerrits, but does not mention Stijntje Claes.^[6] Their first son, Thijs or Mattys, was born in Amsterdam and baptized there in January 1656.^[7] They subsequently traveled to America, settling in New Netherland by June 1658. ^[1]

In June 1658 Jacob was given a permit in New Amsterdam to receive Indians as brokers to buy furs. A New Amsterdam record from July 1658 called him a tailor. A New Amsterdam court record from September 1659 mentions, Matthys van der Heyden (Jacob's father), as deceased.^[1]

After this, he apparently removed to Albany, where in January 1660 he was recorded as owner of a lot. He had other real estate transactions in August 1660, October 1665, July 1668, June 1676,^[8] and May 1676.^[9]

He died in Albany in October 1687.^[10] His widow Anna survived him. She is listed in the Albany census of 1697 and Albany assessment rolls for 1702 and 1709, probably living until some time after 1710.^[11][12]

7. Ariantje, born about 1674.
8. Anna, born about 1675; married Paulus Miller on February 17, 1695, in New York City,
