Research Notes
His age in census records and at death have him born c1818 in St Just in Penwith. His death registration has a father's name of Thomas Tonkin.
The 1871 census for Richard's wife Jane, says that her husband had been in Australia 17 years. [4]
This could be a notice from his son, published in the Bendigo Advertiser 23 Mar 1871:
RICHARD TONKIN, of Clanachmoor, Cornwall, who arrived in the colony per ship Flora Temple, your Son THOMAS TONKIN and WIFE have arrived on Bendigo. Address Dead Horse Flat, near Eaglehawk.[5]
I have been unable to find a passenger list for the Flora Temple. It arrived in Melbourne 19 Oct 1854, the newspaper only lists cabin passengers, there were 443 in steerage. [6]
