Biography

Nancy was the daughter of Elisha Tryon and Mabel White. She was baptized in Middletown on February 18, 1787.^[1] She was married to Stephen Strickland [noted Jr.] in November of 1812 in Middletown by Dan Huntington.^[2]

Research problem

Though the records show Nancy married Stephen Strickland Jr., there appear to be at least four generations of men named Stephen Strickland, and the numbering of their names (without suffix, Jr., III and IV) is confusing, possibly because when one died, the rest all "moved up" a generation. I believe that Nancy's husband was actually -- at the time of his birth in 1781 -- recorded in the documents as Stephen Strickland IV, son of Stephen III and Rhoda Hollister, daughter of Gideon Hollister.^[3]

Nancy's tombstone lists her age at death as 37, which would give a birth year of 1786/7; however the information on her Find a Grave memorial refers to a different Nancy Tryon, daughter of Elizur Tryon, born in 1789 in Glastonbury. The proximity of Nancy's baptism record and marriage record in the Middletown vital records plus the calculated birth year from the tombstone leads me to believe that the Nancy Tryon who married Stephen Strickland was Nancy daughter of Elisha, not Nancy daughter of Elizur.
