Sarah Frances (also spelled Francis) was born 04 November 1871 in Clarke County, Alabama, United States. She was the daughter of Thomas Percy Gilcrease (abt.1825-aft.1876) and Sarah Frances (Calhoun) Gilcrease (abt.1845-aft.1876). She passed away 17 August 1958 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, United States.[1]
When her cousin Edmond Messer Gilchrist submitted an affidavit in 1935, in a case involving a the question of the ownership of land in Texas, his statement outlined his relations. Sarah Frances was listed among them. He said, "...that Thomas P. (Tom) Gilchrist had seven children, two of which died in infancy; that two of his children, Bart Gilchrist and Mandy Gilchrist are dead; that Thomas P. Gilchrist, Jr., James Gilchrist and Frances Gilchrist are still living." A transcription of the full affidavit can be found in the profile for Edmond Messer Gilchrist.
At eight years of age, Sarah Frances was recorded in the 1880 United States Census for Mcleods, Clarke, Alabama, United States living with her older half-brother, M. B. Gilchrist aka Bartley Meredith Gilcrease , Her brother, Thomas, was also in the household.[2] Her brother, James, and sister, Amanda, were living in the household of W. M. Wood during that census.[3] It has been assumed, though not proven, that their parents had passed away and left them orphans.
She married Eli Franklin Atchison, referred to as E. F. Atchison in the marriage record, on 07 February 1889 in Clarke County, Alabama, United States. W. N. Molton, Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony.[4]
Altogether, Sarah Frances and Eli Franklin Atchison were the parents of at least 9 children. Their first child was Bertha Nancy Atchison (Nutt) who was born 07 January 1890 in Alabama, United States and died 20 November 1973 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, United States.[5][6]
A second daughter, Maggie L. Atchison (Selman), was born in Texas, United States on 09 October 1893. Maggie died in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama, United States on 12 November 1965, but was buried in Long Prairie Cemetery in Kerens, Navarro County, Texas, United States.[7][8]
Bertha and Maggie were enumerated with Eli and Sarah Frances in the 1900 United States Census for Justice Precinct 6, Navarro, Texas, United States, along with sister Lou A. (Lou Ann), born 01 June 1899[9]), and brother John (John Henry}, born 01 September 1897[10]), both of whom were born in Texas. It can be concluded that that the Atchisons moved to Texas sometime between 1890 and 1893. Another child, who was born and died between 1889 and 1900 was implied by the census. Eli and his neighbors were farmers.[11]
Son Joseph Thomas Atchison was born 18 September 1901 in Navarro, Navarro County, Texas, United States. He died 27 September 1952 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, United States.[12]
Son Curtis Atchison was born 18 January 1904 in Navarro, Navarro County, Texas, United States. He died March 28, 1922 in Freestone County, Texas, United States.[13]
On the 1910 United States Census for Justice Precinct 3, Navarro, Texas, United States, the household consisted of parents, Franklin and Frances Atchison, and children, Bertha, Magga, John, Anna, Curtis, and Lorene (Lorena Frances, born 20 May 1906[14].) One wonders why son Joseph T. is not listed in this census since he is still alive and shows up in subsequent records for the family. This record conflicted with the 1900 United States Census with regard to total number of children born to Frances and those which were still living--recording that Frances had only given birth to 7 children, all living.[15]
Son James Patterson Atchison was born 14 September 1910 in Navarro County, Texas, United States. He died 10 July 1973 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, United States.[16]
Eli Franklin Atchison died February 13, 1912 and is buried in Eureka Cemetery in Eureka, Waco, Navarro County, Texas, United States. His grave marker there is interesting--it is shaped like the trunk of a tree.[17]
Eight years later, Frances Atchison was widowed and listed as a boarder on the 1920 Census for Bossier, Louisiana, United States. In the same household were Josie, Curtis, Lorena, and James Atchison, all born in Texas. The children's names and approximate ages match up to other available records. It is not known why the family made this move to Louisiana nor how long they lived in Louisiana. [18]
In October of 1925, Sarah's son John was shot by a neighbor who had a dispute with him. John subsequently died on October 31st of his wounds and the neighbor was charged with his murder. The incident took place in Kerens, Navarro County, Texas, United States.[19][20][21]
At least by 1928, Sarah F. had returned to Texas and was living in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, United States at 1402 Peach Street, according to the Waco City Directory for that year.[22]
Sarah F Atchinson, on the 1930 Census for McLennan County, Texas, United States, was shown living in the household of her son Joe T. Atchison (misspelled Atchinson in the record.) Sarah Frances' son James P. is also in the household.[23]
In 1940, according to the United States Census for McLennan, Texas, United States, Sarah F Atchison, and her son James P. were living in the household of Joe T. Atchison, his wife Mirtie L, and their children.[24]
Sarah was living with her daughter, Bertha Nutt, in Waco, McLennan County, Texas when the 1950 United States Census was taken. Sarah's son, James, was also a member of the household.[25]
A scanned image of Sarah Frances' death certificate can be found at Ancestry.com.[26] The cause of her death on 17 August 1958 was "cerebrovascular occusion due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease" according to her attending physician Joseph H. Corbett. She was 86 years old and died at home.
On her Find A Grave memorial there is a picture of both Sarah Frances Atchison and her grave marker. In addition, there is a short obituary, which appeared in the Waco Times Herald on 18 August 1958, which gave the names of her children and the name of one brother, James Gilcrest . She was buried at Rosemound Cemetery in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, United States.[27]
