In the will of John Stephenson on February 9,1773,John Stephenson named his wife as Jean.
After the death of John Stephenson in 1773, Jean met Alexander Fleming at the Bethesda Meeting House,where Robert Fleming Sr. was an elder. Alexander Fleming pursued Jean Stephenson and she accepted his proposal of marriage about 1774but it was customary for a widow to observe a six months period of mourning before remarrying and Jean made Alexander Fleming wait until September.[2]
Jean Fleming's husbandAlexander Fleming served in Captain William Hanna's company of Colonel William Bratton's regiment of General Thomas Sumpter's partisan army.He was taken prisoner by the British and was confined in the old jail at Camden,South Carolina. Smallpox broke out in the prison and Alexander Fleming fell prey to it and died about April 1781. [3]
