Biography

Born about 1650 to unknown parents. She married Samuel Abell . She was still living as of 11 April 1698 when her husband's will was proved in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Two living sons were referenced in the will, though some original records indicate there may have been up to 6 children. [1]

Research Notes

She is frequently called "Susannah Gardiner" and named as a daughter of Luke Gardiner (d. 1674), with no primary evidence to support it; she is named in Samuel Abell's will as Ann, not Susannah, and Luke Gardiner's will of 1674 names no daughters or sons-in-law. There was a Susannah Gardiner, but she was the daughter of Luke Gardiner Junior and was much too young to be the wife of Samuel Abell I.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anne by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anne:

If it's not to much trouble, please retain the research notes regarding erroneous sources. There are a lot of messages, changes, and merges that can be avoided by directing people with good intentions to this section. In addition, some maintainers of the findagrave profile seem to be active elsewhere are actively undoing corrections and deleting comments.

This profile (Unknown-533578) was created specifically because there is no evidence whatever that provides the maiden surname of the wife of Samuel Abell I. Primary sources do, however, make two things clear: 1) her name was Ann, not Susannah; 2) there is no evidence that Luke Gardiner Sr had any daughters, as he named no daughters or sons-in-law in his will. So if you could stop adding sources that reference this incorrect relationship, THAT would be great, thanks. I am going to remove those references, again, because those are NOT SOURCES, they are junk.

Also, the "Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland" database is quite reliable (it's based on wills and land records and provides that information where available; the link you have to Susannah Gardiner shows that she is the daughter of Luke Gardiner Junior and Elizabeth Slye and in the entirely wrong generation to be a wife of Samuel Abell I).

If you review the style guidelines you will find this page.https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Research_Notes

It specifically states that "You might use this section to explain:

The current state of research... Common mistakes or myths. Are there likely sources of mistakes for this person's genealogy? "

This profile is frequently edited in error and I am frequently contacted by people wishing to make edits. The research notes are not citations, they are an effort to reduce mistaken efforts to improve the profile by highlighting the sources of mistakes before additional edits and merges are made.

Hence the edit to the research notes section referencing a) the will of Samuel Abell I which names his wife as "Ann"; 2) the will of Luke Gardiner which names neither daughters nor sons-in-law.

Gardiner may the last name for Susannah Ann (Annie) Abell. I researched this through Ancestry.com through the husband's information and on find a grave for her at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/115873144/susannah-ann-abell also found this information concerning her last name may not be Gardiner.

The maiden surname of Ann, wife of Samuel Abell I, is unknown, and her given name is known only from her husband's will and extant court and land records. The 1674 will of Luke Gardiner of St. Mary's County names sons Richard, John, Luke and Thomas, and (second) wife Elizabeth. It does not name any daughters or sons-in-law. The earliest "Susannah Gardiner" on record is the daughter of Luke Gardiner, Jr, and Elizabeth Slye, and was likely born sometime c. 1700...much too late to be wife of Samuel Abell I.

Hi Nancy. The people who maintain the associated findagrave profile are constantly removing corrections and comments. Many people have tried to work politely with them, correct errors, and be helpful but they refuse to make changes. They delete all of the comments shortly after they are submitted. If you are willing to contact them as well you can start here: https://support.findagrave.com/s/

Just wanted to note that Abell-1141 has a DNA test result and appears to be a direct descendent. DNA test results could eventually resolve the matter of this individual's origins.

Abell-1411 has no DNA test result that is public; the GEDmatch kit number returns "not found".
