Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary (Unknown) Barber was a Virginia colonist.

Mary is estimated to have been born about 1611, probably in England. It is extremely unlikely she was born in Virginia as was stated on this profile. Her parents are at this time unknown. Mary's last name at birth was not "Dennett," her first husband was John Dennett.

Marriages & Children

Mary married John Dennett not long after his arrival in Virginia, possibly about 1635-1637. There is no record of his transporting a wife or children to the colony so marriage and children's births occurred in Virginia. They had known children:[1]

  1. Capt Thomas Dennett, md Ann Booth
  2. Margaret Dennett, md a Juxon, probably John
  3. Sarah Dennett, md. 1) Adam Miles, 2) Matthew Collins, 3) Francis Kirkman

Mary married second William Barber about 1640-1645 in York County, Virginia. Exact date of marriage is unknown. Mary's first husband was known to be living in 1639 and deceased before 1646, so the marriage occurred during those years. They had known children:

  1. Thomas Barber
  2. Mary Barber, md Baskerville

In 1646 William Barber was named in court records as guardian of Mary's children with John Dennett.

  • Orphan's Court pg. 180, York Co, Va. 20 Oct 1646.[2]
    • It is ordered with the consent of Mr. William Barber father in law to the orphants of John Dennet viz: Thomas Dennett, Margarett Dennett, and Sarah Dennett, that the estates belonging to the said severall orphants which this day have given an acco't of this to this Court shall hence forward with all there increase freely come and belong unto the said orphants without any charges for the future subsistance or education of the said orphants or for more care paines or charge preserving and looking to the said severall orphants estates so long as they or any of them shall remaine under the tuition of the above said Wm. Barber. The male catle [only excepted] which belong to the orphants of John Dennett.
    • The estate of Thomas Dennett is one cowe two calves one yeareling. Margarett Dennetts estate two cowes one yearling. Sarah Dennetts estate three cowes one yeareling. Being all gifts by God fathers. Wm. Barber

Death & Legacy

Mrs. Mary (Unknown) Barber (relict of John Dennett) wrote her will on 25 April 1674 and it was proved in court on 3 June 1676 in York County, Virginia. Her will is fairly long and detailed and is remarkable in naming 20 legatees. (It is also helpful to modern family researchers in identifying her children & grandchildren.) Named in her will are:[3]

  • Daughter Mary (Barber) Baskervyle and Mary's children born before 1674, Mary, Elizabeth, Magdalin, and Rebecca Baskervyle
  • Daughter Sarah (Dennett) Collins, formerly Sarah Mills
  • son-in-law Matthew Collins
  • grandchildren Elizabeth, Mary, John, and Sarah Mills; Martha, Mary, and Sarah Collins
  • granddaughters Anne and Sarah Dennett, daus of son, Thomas Dennett
  • granddaughters Mary and Elizabeth Juxon, daus of her daughter Margaret (Dennett) Juxon
  • son Thomas Barber and son-in-law John Baskervyle, her executors

This profile and those of related family members are being reviewed and sourced on behalf of US Southern Colonies Project. As a result of research and sources found, it has been determined that Mary's last name at birth was not "Dennett." She was married in a first marriage to John Dennett and secondly, after his death, to William Barber. Could one of the profile managers please change Mary's name to Unknown, unless they have a source that identifies her parents.

Thank you, Shirley Dalton

I removed the mention of Colony, Laurel, Kentucky. This is an erroneous location that apparently was added when somebody's software autocompleted a manual entry like "Colony." Do not pay any attention to this location; do not restore it to this profile.

Dennett-13 and Dennett-184 appear to represent the same person because: same names, dates, spouse

184 looks like a duplicate, birth, death and huband match; will let you decide whether to merge
