Thomas Urswyck was the second son of Robert Urswyck, by his second wife Ellen, widow of Sir John Dalton.[1] (Thomas did not inherit Upper Rawcliffe, which came to the Urswicks through Robert's first wife and on to the daughters of his elder son, Thomas's half-brother Robert.)
Internet genealogists have mistakenly assumed that Thomas's father's second wife Ellen was Ellen Radcliffe: "There is a marriage recorded between Robert Urswick and Ellen, daughter of Richd. Radclyffe, dated 12th July, 18 Richard II (1394), but this probably refers to the other Robert of the same period, who filled various offices in company with his brother Walter and one of the Radclyffs, as foresters of Bowland."[2] It seems more likely, in light of Thomas Urswyck's killing his "kinsman" Radclyffe in self-defense (per Roskell's History of Parliament), that Ellen Radcliffe was Thomas Urswick's sister-in-law, wife of his brother Robert.
Thomas Urswyck "probably died soon after relinquishing all his appointments in November 1443, when he was already in possession of a papal indult for the plenary remission of sins at the hour of death. He had at least one son, Robert, married to Katherine Haryngton, and it is possible that the Thomas Urswyk† (d.1479), who became chief baron of the Exchequer at Westminster after a distinguished career in the employment of the duchy of Lancaster, was another one of his children."
