Biography
- Sara van Gijselen was born in bondage and was owned by the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) at the Cape., before 5 July 1671 Slave Lodge, de Caep de Goede Hoop. On 31 December 1689 de Caep de Goede Hoop Sara van Gijselen, a company owned slave, was emancipated on condition that upon her death she would bequeath half her possessions to the Company as reimbursement for the costs incurred in educating her. - After his death (1709), she is censured by the Stellenbosch Church Council for giving birth to an illegitimate daughter (Sara Magdalena Meurs - stammoeder of the KROMHOUT family) possibly either fathered or adopted by Stellenbosch Landdrost Samuel Martini de Meurs (from Dodrecht) ...
- She dies (1713) - one of the many victims of devastating epidemic of that fateful year ...
- Her minor children become wards of the Orphan Chamber ... her son Cornelis joins the VOC going to Ceylon [Sri Lanka] on "Vaderland Getrouw" (1717) ... while her married daughter Antje commits adultery ("vleselijke conversatie hadden") with the soldier Jan Splinter as well as with Wilhelm Meyer (from Bremen) who gets assaulted (1725) by his boss [Johannes SMUTS] & 2 co-knechts, beaten with a wooden plank ... & while prostrate, is urinated upon by Antje in his mouth & on his genitals ("Antje blijkbaar degene wie Meijer iets misdaan had, tilde de rokken op en urineerde Meijer op het geslacht en in die mond") ...
- Thereafter, he is further beaten by his 3 assailants while his boss hands his slave Louis van Angola a leather strap exhorting him to beat Meyer further ... ("Daarna sloegen die drie verder. Die baas gaf vervolgens zijn slaaf Louis van Angola een riem in handen: 'Raak wat caffer, 't is maar een moff!'") ...
- Not surprisingly thereafter, the victim lodges a complaint of assault with the fiscal ...

The original register is now housed in the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerkargief, Noordwal-Wes, Stellenbosch, as G1 1/1. The transcription was originally made in 2006 by Richard Ball. Corrections were received from Delia Robertson and Alwyn Smit and Corney Keller had now completely revised and amended the original transcript (February 2012).
