Biography

    • Sara van Gijselen was born in bondage and was owned by the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) at the Cape., before 5 July 1671 Slave Lodge, de Caep de Goede Hoop. On 31 December 1689 de Caep de Goede Hoop Sara van Gijselen, a company owned slave, was emancipated on condition that upon her death she would bequeath half her possessions to the Company as reimbursement for the costs incurred in educating her. [1]

    • Her minor children become wards of the Orphan Chamber ... her son Cornelis joins the VOC going to Ceylon [Sri Lanka] on "Vaderland Getrouw" (1717) ... while her married daughter Antje commits adultery ("vleselijke conversatie hadden") with the soldier Jan Splinter as well as with Wilhelm Meyer (from Bremen) who gets assaulted (1725) by his boss [Johannes SMUTS] & 2 co-knechts, beaten with a wooden plank ... & while prostrate, is urinated upon by Antje in his mouth & on his genitals ("Antje blijkbaar degene wie Meijer iets misdaan had, tilde de rokken op en urineerde Meijer op het geslacht en in die mond") ...
    • Thereafter, he is further beaten by his 3 assailants while his boss hands his slave Louis van Angola a leather strap exhorting him to beat Meyer further ... ("Daarna sloegen die drie verder. I have set Sara van Gijselen (Van Gijselen-1) and Sara van Gyselen (Van Gyselen-3) as unmatched merges because the lowest number has in this case the better spelling but the higher number has been protected. So the higher number needs deprotection first and the lowest number needs to be protected instead.
