Biography

John (van der Leij) Slater came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

John SLATER 1830-1914.[1]

John was born 23rd July 1830 in Opsterland. His parents were Rense Tjitse van der Leij [1809-1889]and Grietje Bonnes Brandsma [1807-1831]. From a Yahoo/Friesland website the first van der Leij ancestor recorded is Tjisse Dircks van der Leij married Toonka Jans 28th December 1623, Vrouwesparochie, Friesland. The list then carries through to Rense, who married twice and was a barge master, his son Tjitse was a barge hand.[2]

John Slater married twice, with his first marriage being to Eliza Richmond 5/8/1854, Eliza died 15/6/1872, at Crafers. Their first son Charles was born 2/6/1855. Their other children were Renzer born 1863, Grace born 1860, an un-named born 1863, Eliza born 1865, Willam born 1868 and Albert Herman born 1870.

John was a Dutch sailor who jumped ship at Port Adelaide c.1847, changed name to John Slater prior to his marriage. (Van der leij in dutch means "of the slate" - thus "Slater"). He remarried Mary Ann Bradley (nee Hines) on 15/02/1873.[3] [4][5]

He remained a Dutch citizen in Australia. John had 6 other children with Mary Ann.

He lost a leg in a horse and cart accident and made a replacement wooden leg for himself. His family bible still exists with his Dutch name and date of birth and birthplace as well as his English name on the opening page.

John died at Belair in South Australia on 10 September 1914, His daughter to Eliza Richmond, Eliza Foster, was the relative noted on his death Registration. [6] John was buried at Stirling on 14 September 1914.
