Biography
Mary (Vaux) Walcott is Notable.
An American artist and naturalist known for her watercolour paintings of wildflowers, Mary Vaux Walcott spent every summer in the Canadian Rockies for over 40 years. She was the first woman in Canada to summit a peak over 3,000 m., and she and her two brothers conducted some of the first studies of Canadian glaciers. She was also the first woman to be invited to give a presentation at the Royal Canadian Institute.
Born in 1860 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, [1]she was the eldest of the three children of George Vaux and his wife Sarah. She married paleontologist Charles D. Walcott in 1914.
She died in 1940 while on a trip to visit friends in Nova Scotia.[2]
Mount Mary Vaux in Jasper National Park is named in her honour. In 2022, the Smithsonian Gardens named an orchid hybrid, the x Rhyncattleanthe Mary Vaux Walcott.[3]
