Biography

Birth year is derived from death record--6 Feb 1760 of his father.
Name: He is called Jean Louis Devic or De Vic in the St. Charles Original Acts, 1797 when his wife's deceased father George Haydel's estate was inventoried, and again, when an inventory was taken for the husband of his sister Catherine. The family of Louis (Ludwig) was sometimes called DeVic from "Ludwig" making it easier for Anglo or French scribes to detail the record without having to spell Vaguesbach or Waguespack or any of the other variations of the German name.
Death: 24 Sept 1845 at age 90 years, Thibodaux. [1]
"...There he [St.-Amand] found the widow, Marie-Jacobine LeRoux, and her 11 children (all girls), namely: ...Eleonore, wife of Jean-Louis Waguespack;... and again when the heirs appeared in 3-5-1798 to seek the partition of the succession of the late George Haydel: Eleonore was represented by her husband Jean-Louis Devic Waguespack. [2]
No. 1460 11-19-1797
INVENTORY OF THE COMMUNITY PROPERTY OF THE LATE JEAN-BAPTISTE CHAMPAGNE FILS AND HIS WIFE, CATHERINE WAGUESPACK.[3]
St.-Amand was informed that Jean-Baptiste Champagne fils died October 30, 1797, and is survived by five children, namely: Adélaïde (7-1/2), Eugène (6), Céleste (5), Jean-Baptiste (4), Marianne (21 days).
The inventory was taken in the presence of Jean-Baptiste Champagne père, Jean-Louis De Vic Waguespack, Catherine's brother, and the widow.
Inventory taken by Paul Toups and Joseph Beauvais. Witness were Niclas Brou and Alphonse Frederic. Jean-Baptiste Champagne père was named curator of the minors. Among items inventoried was a farm 2 arpents wide by the customary depth, located about 20 miles above New Orleans on the right bank of the river descending, bounded below by the farm of Jean Vaudry and above by that of Madame Alain.
