Biography

US Black Heritage Project
William (Welden) Walden II is a part of US Black heritage.

William Walden, born say 1727, was called a "Mulatto" on 17 November 1747 when he was presented by the Surry County, Virginia court for "Profane Swearing" [Orders 1744-53, 391]. He was sued for a debt of £2 in the Surry County court on 17 September 1755 [Orders 1751-57, 287]. He was married before 21 November 1758 when he was presented by the court: "Against...Wm Walden...David Walden...for each and every of them not listing their wife's according to law supposing the said persons to be Mulattoes" [Orders 1757-64, 135].

He received a patent for 43 acres on the south side of Cypress Swamp in Surry County on 11 July 1761 and a patent for 27 acres on 7 August 1761 [Patents 33:1040; 34:924].

On 14 June 1762 he sold the 43 acres to David Debrix, and the following day his wife Sarah relinquished her dower rights to this land in the Surry County court. He was called William Walden, carpenter, on 21 December 1762 when he purchased 194 acres adjoining his land [DB 8:129, 151].

His 8 February 1775 will, proved 27 June 1775 in Surry County, left 221 acres of land to his wife Sarah and at her death to his three sons: William, Michael, and Drury. It also named his son John and daughters Priscilla and Elender [WB 10:405-7].

Sarah Walden was taxable in Surry County from 1782 to 1787: taxable on a slave named Glasgow in 1782; taxable on slaves Sarah and Nanny in 1788, taxable on slave Aggy in 1791, taxable on a horse from 1792 to 1798 [PPTL, 1782-90, frames 359, 380, 390, 482; 1791-1816, frames 69, 275, 308] and taxable on 147 acres from 1782 to 1787 [Land Tax List . She was deceased by 1814 when her estate was taxable [Land Tax List 1782-1820].

On 27 March 1783 the Surry court released her from paying taxes on "Betty, her Negro slave" [Orders 1775-85, 225].

  2. Micajah, born say 1757, married Martha Franklin who was the heir of Charles and Ambrose Franklin who died in the service during the Revolutionary War [NCGSJ III]. Micajah was in the 15 March 1780 return of troops for Northampton County, North Carolina [Troop Returns, Box 6, Folder 11] and received voucher no. 5909 for £6 in Halifax District for his military services to the Revolution [North Carolina Revolutionary Pay Vouchers, 1779-1782, http://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2WT-GR5T, Walden, Micajah]. He was head of a Northampton County household of 5 "other free" in 1790 and 8 "other free" and a slave in 1800. His will, proved in December 1806 in Northampton County, left 94 acres of land in Northampton County to his wife Martha and William3 Walden and left land in Surry County, Virginia, to his brother Drury [WB 2:575]. William was born about 1730. He passed away about 1775. After William's death, his son, Drury, was bound out as a poor infant, at the order of the court of Surry County, Virginia, on 26 March 1776.[3]

Research Notes

The will attributed to William is for "William Woling/Waling" and names sons William, Michael, and Drury. To Drury, he gives "the Plantation I now live on, with the third part of my Land adjoining to him and his Heirs forever" (which does not seem to match with Drewry Walden being bound out as a poor infant in March of 1776). The other two parts to be equally divided between William and Michael. Estate not to be divided until after death of his wife, Sarah Woling (perhaps this accounts for Drury/Drewry's poverty?). To son, John Woling, 5 shillings; daughter, Priscilla, 5 shillings; daughter, Elender, one shilling; wife, Sarah Woling, one bed and furniture. As much of estate be sold as needed to pay debts. William Bailey, William Andrews, and Stephen Sorsby to make equal division of the land agreeable to wife, Sarah. Executors: William Bailey and William Andrews. Witnesses: Mary M. Andrews, Sarah Bailey, and Benjamin Putney. Date of Will: 8 February 1775; Proven in court in Surry County, Virginia, on 27 June 1775. When the will was proven, the executors nominated in the will refused to accept the burden of doing so, and Sarah Waling was made Executrix by the Court.[4]

Daughter Rebecca isn't named in will. The last name isn't a fit, but this could be because it was a poor copy or the family used multiple spellings/variations of the surname. More research is needed on this family.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
