  • Source: S666 Media: Compiled Genealogy Descendants of Stukely Westcott, William Westcott Sr 27. William6 Westcott, Sr. (Jeremiah5, Stukely4, Mr.3, Edward2, Thomas1)was born 1680 in Warwick, Kent Co, Rhode Island, and died Aft. 1758 in Cranston, Providence Co, Rhode Island. He married Abigail Gardiner, daughter of Henry Gardiner and Abigail Remington. She was born 1680 in Warwick, Kent Co, Rhode Island, and died c 1735 in Cranston, Providence Co, Rhode Island. Notes for William Westcott, Sr.: He was made freeman in 1720, and living in 1758. Upon attaining his majority, he removed from Warwick into the adjoining town of Providence, later town of Cranston. His farm formed a part of what is known as the"Meshantituck 1000 acres." That part of these lands bore the Indian name"Consamasset," sometimes spelled "Conchamasset." It was located south ofthe road now leading from Knightsville to Scituate, and about one and a half miles west of Knightsville. The road was not then opened, and when opened passed some distance to the northward of his house, leaving it then, as indeed it is now, in a secluded spot, but one full of rural beauty. The cellar of the house and the remains of the old well were to be seen in 1886, and may still be seen for all that Mr Whitman, knows. The old family burial ground is nearby. Only rough and uninscribed stones mark the graves. The Potter family, with whom the Westcotts intermarried, lived on an adjoining farm. Deeds are on file from William to his son William in 1732, and again in 1805, from Major John Westcott, a great-grandson of the first William, to Robert Sheldon, when the farm passed out of the Westcott name. In 1886, it was owned by Marcellus J. Flanders. (History and Genealogy of Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 212,1932) It is only definitely known that William was "of age as early as 1709";his Christian name was probably derived from his maternal grandfather William England. An old Bible record giving nicknames and years of birth under the caption of "My brothers and sisters," probably is that of Williams' children. The names of Bethiah, John, Experience, Penelope and Amos and years of birth check with those of persons whose records have been determined from vital and family records and deeds in Rhode Island.(Book of Appendices, Stukely Westcott, Vol. 2, Pg. 289, 1939) Children of William Westcott and Abigail Gardiner are: + 99 i.
