Biography

The son of Deacon Valentine Wightman and Abigail Brown. According to KarenBrayKeeley the marriage of Joseph Wightman and Amy Sholes took place 24 Mar 1799 at Bozrah, New London county, Connecticut. Their first child Joseph was born in Bozrah, and they were listed there in the 1800 census. They moved to New York by 1802 (their 2nd child Erastus b. 12 Apr 1802 at Columbia, Herkimer, NY). (bio by: Kay Stephens)

Joseph Wightman went soon after marriage to Columbia, Herkimer County, New York, his eldest child being born there in 1800. On the death of his father in 1814, he received his share on the paternal estate. It appears from the records in Bozrah that he sold to his brother Elijah, in Bozrah, on 20 September 1814, all of the land thus received by inheritance, both in Connecticut and New York (Bozrah Deeds, Bk. iii, witnesses David Wightman, Asa Woodworth).

The census of 1820 for German Flatts, Herkimer County, New York shows him there as head of a household comprising eight children, their ages suggesting the birthdates given below. He is not listed in Herkimer County in 1830. No further data. [1]
