Biography

John Woodyer or Woodier was born on 5 Apr 1831 in Newton, Lancashire. He was the son of William and Ellen Woodyer. He was christened on 8 May 1831 in Newton Chapel of Ease (part of Winwick parish). His father's occupation was given as weaver, and the family's address as Newton.

By June 6th 1841, John's family was living in Crow Lane, Warrington.

By March 30th 1851, they were in Liverpool Street, St Helens. John was an engineer; his father William was a labourer.

John married Alice Lofthouse in 1852, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district.

By April 7th 1861, they were living in Dam Row, Sutton, and had four children; John was an engine fitter.

By April 2nd 1871, they were in Eccleston, and had seven children in their household; John was an engine fitter.

By April 3rd 1881, they were in Lowe Street, Windle, with six children and two boarders - one was John Morris, the future husband of their daughter Ann, and the other was Jane Lofthouse aged 38, Alice's sister.

By April 5th 1891, John was boarding in Widnes; he was still working as a fitter. Alice and their four children who had not yet flown the nest were living in Barton Street, Windle, along with two granddaughters who had been born in America, Alice's brother John Lofthouse, and Alice's sister-in-law Elizabeth Pennington.

John died in 1898, aged 69. He was buried on 15 Mar 1898 in St Helens Cemetery, in an unpurchased grave.

Alice died in 1899, aged 66. She was buried on 21 Mar 1899 in St Helens Cemetery, in an unpurchased grave.
