Bess was born on 9 Jul 1883 to Henry Bascom and Julia Ann (Hobbs) Wright in Carlisle Co., Kentucky. [4] Bess was known for speaking her mind (and an absence of tact in certain situations). In 1904, Bess was visiting the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. Horace Braden Hargrove, Sr. was visiting at the same time, perhaps mulling over the Palace of Electricity which showed off streetcars manufactured by the St. Louis Car Company. They met on the train back to Kentucky and became smitten with one another. [5] Horace and Bess married on 10 Oct 1907 in Graves Co., Kentucky. [6] Record et. al paint a picture of a troublesome end for Bess as calcification of tissues in her brain created a new host of cognitive and emotional problems. [7]
