Candymaker of products including Peeps
Sam (בערנשטײן) Born has Jewish Roots.

Early Life

Sam was born in 1891 to a Jewish family in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, under his original name - Samuel Bernstein. In 1909, he sailed on the S/S Merion from Liverpool to Philadelphia; on the ship's passenger list, his occupation was listed as "candy maker". [1] In 1916, Sam was awarded the "key to the city" of San Francisco for inventing a machine that mechanically inserted sticks into lollipops. Sam married Ann E. (Shaffer) Born in 1923 in New York City. [2]

Success as a Candy Maker

In 1923, he founded the Just Born company in Brooklyn, New York; a candy manufacturer that still manufactures Peeps, Mike and Ike, and Hot Tamales. In his 1924 declaration for immigration purposes, he indicated he was a chocolate manufacturer. [3] He relocated his business to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1932.

Sam (בערנשטײן) Born was a candy maker in Pennsylvania.

Peeps (most often considered an Easter candy but "Always in Season") are produced by Just Born, a candy manufacturer founded by Sam in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1953, Just Born acquired the Rodda Candy Company and its marshmallow chick line and replaced the painstaking process of hand-forming the chicks with mass production. When Sam displayed a sign for his freshly made candy, he titled it "Just Born", playing off of his last name and the fact that he made his candy fresh daily. Just Born, was soon the "largest marshmallow candy manufacturer in the world."

He is also credited with the invention of chocolate sprinkles, known as "jimmies," and the hard coating on ice cream bars. Not only was Sam inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame for his accomplishments, [4] but his brothers-in-law and partners, Irvin C. Shaffer [5] and Jack M. Shaffer [6] were also inductees. In 2021, Sam's grandson announced that he was stepping down as chief executive officer of Just Born, Inc. which is ranked as the 10th largest confectionery company in the United States.[7]

Death at Sea

In March 1959, Sam died on board the Cunard liner, Britannic, while it was at sea, having departed from Lisbon in route to Southampton. He and his wife were on the last lap of a 14,000-mile world cruise when he passed away. [8] He is buried in New York City. [9]
