A proposed category structure has been presented and discussed among the members of the Categorization Project, and has been through the proposal/feedback process in the G2G forum.

Here is the finalized plan for the Immigration Categories:

Why does fifth level switch from Immigrant/ Emigrant to Migrant ?

I guess because it is the lowest-level category. For instance let's say we have a category for emigrants from Södermanland, Sweden to Minnesota, USA. The category would contain exactly the same profiles as the symmetric category Immigrants to Minnesota, USA from Södermanland, Sweden. So instead of duplicating the categories, only one is used "Migrants from ... to ...".

This is really excellent work, Steven. I am amazed a how simple it is, in the end, considering the complexity of the premise.

Thank you Isabelle!

And Jillaine, Isabelle is correct. The thought process was that in order to prevent duplication and allow for multi-stream categorization, a specific structure would need to be set up in advance.

We discussed multiple possibilities, Immigrants to...from... and Emigrants from...to... but each of those options presented some of the issues we have already seen in the existing categories, that of user perspective and the direction of research.

I hope the category pages themselves will make it really clear when to use which one. Because I'm confused about which level to use and which category (ies?) to use.

For example, one of my ancestors emigrated from Schwenningen, Württemberg to Buffalo, New York in 1867. What should I put on his profile?

There will be both a dedicated page detailing the layout (similar to the Military and War files) linked to the major categories, and a project box on the categories that details the specific category and how to use it. This may take some time before these are fully populated.

In your instance above, I believe you would be using Migrants from Schwenningen to New York.

Looks good.

A late query/comment. Should the top level category by [[Category:Migrants]] rather than [[Category:Migration]] if the profiles in it are all people? The 20 April comment seems to propose this, but L1 isn't changed.

Category:Migration could include the ship/voyage categories that do not relate purely to people.

Category:Migration could include the ship/voyage categories that do not relate purely to people.

This is a correct statement, so the category would not be limited to person profiles. There are also different classes of movement available (Emigrants and Immigrants), as well as specific types of movements, such as those worked on by the British Home Children, and Australian Convicts and First Settlers Projects.

Thank you for the clarification. I'm satisfied again :-)
