Disputed origins and other matters:

John Bachiler was associated with Rev. Stephen Bachiler, Hampton, New Hamsphire, founder, in Robert Charles Anderson's 1995 Great Migration article about the Hampton man. There isn't any reason to report this "John Batchelder/Bachelor" as a son of Rev. Stephen, nor to confuse the two men's families. They are two different families with a similar name.

John's wife had been reported as Elizabeth Dickinson/Dickenson, but this was almost certainly the wife of his brother, Joseph, who brought Elizabeth with him from England.^[1]

There are mixed reports about the parentage of the Bachelor brothers who migrated to New England.

A."Henry Bachelor, of St George's, Canterbury, brewer aged about 35. He was bp. at Margate, Kent, 14 March 1601/2, son of Mark and Mary (___) (Fantigne) Bachelor." footnote 51 cites the Parish register of Margate, Kent [FHL 1,886,154 Item 7] Other children bapt at Margate were Mark Bachelor, 7 October 1599; Joseph Bachelor, 7 October 1604; and Mary Bachelor, 1 March 1606/7. John the younger brother was born about 1610.^[2] As early as 1919, Mary Lovering Holman, suggested Mark and Mary as probable parents of brothers Henry, Joseph and John.^[3]

John Bachelor

John was born about 1610 in Kent, England^[6] This is an estimate based on the fact that he states his age as 63 in his will written in 1673. John also stated at Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1648,that he was about forty-seven years old, making him born about 1601^[7].

John married twice. First he married Mary _____,^[6][10][5] and afterwards married Elizabeth ________. Elizabeth is sometimes called Elizabeth Herrick^[6][5], but there is no proof of this^[7].

• Admitted to the Congregational Church June 23, 1639, John Bachelder and his wife.^[13][6]
• Received grant of 20 acres of land, to which was subsequently added 60 acres more.^[6]
• He was made freeman, Nov. 13, 1640.^{[11][6][5][14]}
• Assessor / tax collector, 1657.^[5]

John Bachelor, "the elder", died 13: 9m: 1675. (November 13, 1675) ^[15] Sometimes death date of September is used. This is an error. Modern ninth month is September, but their ninth month was "Old Style" calendar and ninth month is November.

The will of John Bachelor dated May 17, 1673, and presented in court Dec 22, 1675, made bequests to his wife, Elizabeth, sons John and Joseph, daughter Hanna Corning and grandson John Creasy/Cressy.
