Biography

Swiss flag
Michael Bachman is of Swiss descent

Michael Bachman [1][2] Birth 7 Feb 1692 Oberdiessbach, Canton, Bern, Switzerland [3] [4] Michael was born in Switzerland to Jacob(Jaggi) Bachman and Barbara Schindler [5] and immigrated to America in 1712 (See Rupp's History, pg. 437). He came to the US as part of the Palatine migration.

Spelling of the name: Early records in Lancaster County usually show his name as BAUGHMAN, which serves to distinguish his family from other early immigrants who went by BOWMAN, such as a very early John BOWMAN in the Conestogoe tax area. Early maps show creeks as Bachman’s Run. By the 1860s the people using BACHMAN and those using BAUGHMAN were about equal in number in the county.

Michael was married to Katherine Stoner. Katherine was daughter of John Stoner aka Steiner. Both Bachman and Stoner descendants were leaders in bringing the Brethren Church to America. A great number of the families in now Franklin Co. PA descend from Stoner and Bachman..

Michael settled at Chiques Creek near Manheim, Lancaster County where he owned and operated a grist mill by the time his brother-in-law Ulrich Zook, came over. Bachman and Ulrich Zook (Barbara's husband) bought land together.

Historical Papers and Addresses of the Lancaster County Historical Society Vol 1. Repeats from page 13 of History of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania: With Biographical .. Vol 1, where it is noted that Michael Baughman purchased in Conestogue Maner in spite of Indian reluctance to give up their land. Hostilities, including with the Paxton Boys is reviewed.

Michael Warranted 400 acres in Lancaster Co. 20 Nov 1717

Later, he moved in what is now Fontana, Lebanon County, he purchased or took up 1,000 acres of land. It’s unlikely Michael moved to Lebanon Co; instead he gave that land to some of his children and stayed on his home plantation – his will was probated in Manheim Tp. Note: Bachman’s Run enters the Little Conestogo Creek on the NE edge of East Petersburg, Lancaster Co, and there is a mill pond on it (see Mill Pond Rd. & Olde Mill Ct.).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Michael by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Michael:

We probably should change the German Descent tag to a Swiss one.

Yes, absolutely. Change it to the Switzerland Sticker.

There seems to be a mixup with Michael's son Johannes(John) and his brother Johannes (Bachman-1114). The information in Geni seems to be more correct on this, and there is the baptism record for his brother Johannes from Oberdiessbach, Bern, Switzerland.

Yes, this is a clear conflation of two different men. There is no profile yet for the other Johannes, so I think the simplest solution is to adapt this one for the younger Johannes, changing his date of birth and parents. And I'll create a new profile for Michael's brother, born in Switzerland.

Michael's son Johannes(Bachman-378) appears to already be linked.

Bachman-378 is Christian Bachman. I've added Johannes, his brother, who is father of Christian, the Rev, War soldier.

Bachman-32 and Bachman-157 appear to represent the same person because: Though Bachman-157 wasn't constructed with a son named Michael, there is a Michael mentioned in the will. Many of then names in 157 are recognized by the profile intent of Bachman-32. Please merge. This same Bachman had sister Barbara who married Ulrich Zug.

Bachman-32 and Bachman-310 appear to represent the same person because: There is no evidence that Hans Bachman existed. He was from automated download of PDF and abandoned. I changed Hans to Michael and merged the profile with son Michael.
