Hi CJ, a warm [though belated] welcome to WikiTree. As you have noticed many / most of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eigtheenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made. Many have also been validated with primary sources.

A few handy links to get you started:

  1. Getting Started
  2. Adding to WikiTree.
  3. What are duplicates? Why should and how can they be avoided?
  4. G2G Help - for any questions you may have ....

Perhaps you would like to join the South African Roots Project ? Besides links to sources, there help pages that are also useful.

This would help you understand what is needed to help out with the project(s). See Van_Wijk-720 for example. Your question regarding Maton-56 - the answer is simple - We (WikiTree) regard the spelling of the surnames as can be found in the earliest records, in many cases the baptisms, as standard to future research. Every profile and every generation has a variety of spellings. So if the transcription & image reads "Maton", it is protected with that and AKA'd Mouton.

Hi again CJ,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

The South African Roots Project and it's sub-project for the Cape of Good Hope would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Hi CJ,

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far?

Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful? Most of us still have some questions after reviewing them.

I'm here to help with issues and questions about how WikiTree works. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page or send a private message.

PS If you get a "Page Not Found" error when clicking WikiTree email links, you can often find a working version in the public comments on your profile.

PPS Did you discover that the tags on your profile are clickable links to a page of other people who have that tag? You can add more, up to 20 total.

CJ, thank you for joining WikiTree and thanks for the question.

There is not a way to import directly from FamilySearch. If you use Chrome, there is an app that will allow you to import each profile with the information attached. Let me know if you are interested in that and I will explain how it works.

I hope you enjoy the WikiTree site as much as I do. It is a fabulous place for your ancestors!!

It is my pleasure to confirm you as a full member of WikiTree.

I am a volunteer greeter here to answer your questions.

Our New Member How-To pages can help you get started adding profiles or just learning your way around. These help pages will save you time and perhaps frustration in your new journey through WikiTree.

Welcome to the community!

Ginny ~ WikiTree Greeter

P.S. Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile as the links will work from there.

Welcome!

This is just a note to say hello and to let you know that I am available to answer questions about joining WikiTree.

To contact me, click the link to my name, then send a private message or post a comment on my profile page.

P.S. If links do not work in an email from WikiTree, try them from the comment section of your profile page.
