Mary Anne was born in 1833, the daughter of William Barratt and Mary Ann Moore. She was baptised on the 17 April 1833 at St Giles', Camberwell, London, England.[1]

In 1842, the Barratt family boarded the London and emigrated to New Zealand. The London departed from London, England on January 1st 1842; arriving Port Nicholson, Wellington, New Zealand on the 1st May 1842. The passenger list shows William Barratt (aged 33) a painter and glazier, Mary Ann (aged 33), Mary Ann (aged 9), Sarah (aged 7), Caroline (aged 6), William (aged 4), Sophia (aged 3), and Ellen (aged 3 months).[2]
In 1850, Mary Anne Barratt (shown as Barrett in transcription of marriage record) married John Cooper.[3]
