Biography

Mathys Blanchan Jr. was a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Mathieu Blanchon was born 18 April 1655. He was the son of Mathieu Blanchon, Senior, and Magdelaine Joire. He was baptized 22 April 1655 at the Franzoesisch Reformierte Gemeinde (French Reformed Church) in Mannheim, in the Palatinate, one of the constituent states of the Holy Roman Empire. [1] Today Mannheim lies in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Mathieu Blanchan, Senior, included Mathieu, Junior, in both of his wills. In his 1665 will, he referred to his son as Mattheu, and stated that he was a minor. [2] In his 1671 will, he called his son Matthis. [3]

Mathieu's parents were married in Armentières, which today is in northern France on the border with Belgium. They were Huguenots and fled first to England and then to Mannheim, where Mathieu was born.

On 27 April 1660, not long after Mathieu's fifth birthday, the family sailed for America aboard the ship De Vergulde Otter (The Gilded Otter). They arrived in New Amsterdam (now New York City) that August. The passenger list included:

Matthews Blanchard, (Mathheus Blanchan(d)) from Artois, agriculturist, and wife and three children ages 5, 9 and 12 years. [4]

The family soon moved to the village of Wildwyck (now Kingston) in Ulster County, New York. [5]

Marriage and Children

Matys Blanjan "de jonge" (i.e., the younger), married Margrietje Claas Van Schoonhoove on 30 March 1679 in the Old Dutch Church in Kingston, Ulster County. According to the marriage register, he was from Mannheim in the Palatinate in what is now Germany, while she was from Nieu Albanien (now Albany, New York). It was the first marriage for both of them. [6]

Mathys and Margriet had the following children baptized in the Old Dutch Church in Kingston: [7]

  1. Matys Blanjan, bapt. 30 Nov. 1679. Witnesses included Matys Blanjan, senior, and Lysbet Blanjan.
  2. Nicolaus Blan Jean, bapt. 2 July 1682. Witnesses included Magdaleen Blan Jean.
  3. Cornelia Blan Jean, bapt. (at Hurley, NY) 7 Oct. 1683.
  4. Magdalena Blanjean, bapt. 7 March 1686. Witnesses included Magdaleen Blanjean.
  5. Catheryne Blanchamp, bapt. 7 May 1688. Witnesses included Catheryne Blanckchamp.
  6. Elizabeth Blangean, bapt. 28 Jan. 1692. Witnesses included Elizabeth Blangean.
  7. Nathaniel Blanchan, bapt. 18 Nov. 1694.
  8. Margriet Blansschjan, bapt. 29 Oct. 1699.

Land and other Legal Records

In 1684, the inhabitants of Kingston petitioned Ulster County for the right to choose their town officers. Among those signing were Mattys Blanchan and his father, Matheu Blanchan. The petition was not well received. The petitioners were arrested and indicted for riot. Upon pleading guilty to signing and presenting the petition, they were fined, but after acknowledging that they had been ill-advised, they were released and their fines remitted. [8]

On 6 March 1686, Mathys Blanshan, of Hurley, Ulster County, purchased 100 acres of land in Marbletown, Ulster County, from William and Grietie Schutt. The land was bounded on the north by Esopus Creek. [9]

On 1 February 1694/5, Mattÿs Blanchan, of Hurley, Ulster County, and his wife, Margreat, sold land in Hurley to Lammert Huyberse. The land was adjacent to the lands of Louis DuBois and Roelof Swartwout. Mattÿs was able to sign his name, but Margreat signed with her mark. To afford the property, Lammert Huybertse mortgaged land in Hurley. [10]

Matthew Blanchan was living in Marbletown, Ulster County, on 5 November 1695 when he purchased 664 acres of land called Fishers Farm from William and Jeane Fisher. The farm included land on both sides of Roundout Creek, as well as a portion of Palse River (now the Wallkill River), and was located near what is now the town of Rosendale in Ulster County. [11]

Death and Will

The exact date of Mathys Blanchan's death is currently unknown, and his will has yet to be found, but two 1721 Ulster County deeds [12] between his children place his date of death sometime between 9 June 1719, when he bought land in Marbletown, Ulster County, and 10 June 1721, when he was referred to in the deeds as "Mattys Blanchan, late of Fishers Farme … deceased." The deeds also listed his children:

  • Mattys Blanchan, of Fishers Farm
  • Nicolas Blanchan of Fishers Farm
  • Cornelia, wife of Andre lefevre,
  • Magdalen, wife of Samuel Bevier,
  • Cathrine, wife of Jean lefevre, and
  • Elizabeth, wife of Peter Cantain.

According to the deeds, Mattys Blanchan, the father, specified in his will that Fishers Farm, located on both sides of Rondouts Creek, should go to his sons, Mattys and Nicolas, while his four daughters were to share three parcels of land in Marbletown and Kingston. In the deeds, the two sons released any rights they had to the daughters' land, and the daughters released their rights to the sons' lands. The second deed also specified that one of the Marbletown parcels was "conveyed u[n]to the above named Mattys Blanchan, Deceased, by the trustees of Marbletown" on 9 June 1719, so he must have been alive at that time.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mathys by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mathys:

  • A father's death date (Blanchan-17 died 1699) should not be more than nine months before one of his children's birth dates (Blansschjan-1 born 29 Oct 1699).

Blanchan-27 and Blanchan-17 appear to represent the same person because: Okay to merge now into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. This was originally thought to be a younger brother who died young, but no evidence for that, and so it was then set for merge, pending move out of NNS and removal of extra PPP, which has now been done. Thanks!

Blanchan-27 and Blanchan-17 appear to represent the same person because: no record of two Matthews (also confirmed by a private e-mail: "Blanchan-27 is just another duplicate of Matthew Jr., and should be merged, notwithstanding the early birth date.") Please merge (retaining 1655 birth date... I'll change Blanchan-27's to match). Cheers, Liz

parents' marriage was in 1633, so 1628 birth year is likely incorrect. Also, death location of "Ulster, County, France" mixes locations (Ulster County, New Netherland). Brother Mathieu Jr.'s profile Blanchan-17 shows birth in 1655. If correct, this probably was a second child of the name. Which is why Blanchan-27 and Blanchan-17 are set as a rejected match.
