Biography

Philip Bowman has German Roots.
Philip Bowman was a Pennsylvanian.

Philip, son of John Bauman and Catherine Stambaugh,[1] was born 15 February 1846 in Paradise (later Jackson) Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1]

In 1860, fourteen-year-old Philip S. resided on the family farm in Heidelberg Township with his parents John (age 40, tenant farmer) and Catharine Bowman (44), and siblings John S. (10), Henry S. (11), Angelina (9), Agnes (7), Catharine (5) and Alice Senora Bowman (1).[2]

On 10 October 1867 at Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church in Hanover, York County, he married Lydia Emeline Keller,[3] daughter of Samuel Keller and Julian Rohrbaugh.[4] They had four children:

  1. Milton Emory Bowman (b. 29 June 1868;[5][6] m. Marie Louise Niederhofer;[7][6] d. 15 April 1944).[6][8]
  2. Martha Edith Bowman (b. 21 March 1872;[9] d. unmarried 18 February 1953).[10]
  3. Ira Alvin Bowman (b. 3 October 1877;[11][12] m. Mary R. Troxell;[13] d. 24 September 1947).[14][15]
  4. Oscar Raymond Bowman (b. 1 August 1882;[16][17] m. Helen Harvine Frock;[18][19] d. 31 July 1951).[20]

The couple settled in Heidelberg Township, where the household in 1870 consisted of Philip S. (age 25, tenant farmer), Lydia (24) and their first-born Milton Emory Bowman (2) as well as a domestic servant named Pius Sindorf (16).[21]

By 1880 the family had moved to Penn Township, York County, and grown to encompass P. S. (age 34, farmer), Lydia E. (33), Milton E. (11, student), Martha E. (8) and Ira Alvin Bowman (2), and a servant named Catherine Smith (18).[22] Philip (54, clerk), Lydia (54, mother of four, all living), Martha E. (28), Ira A. (23, iron moulder) and Oscar R. Bowman (18, student) remained in the house they had in Penn Township in 1900.[23] Phlip S. (64, clerk, registrar's office), Lydia (63) and Martha (38) continued to reside at 585 Baltimore Pike in Penn Township in 1910.[24] Milton (41), his spouse and six children lived in the same house as a separate family.[25]

In addition to being a farmer and clerk, the Hon. Philip Stambaugh Bowman was a teacher (5 years).[26] He was elected assessor for Heidelberg Township (1869-1870), school director (1874-1875); to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat to serve the 1877, 1878 and 1879 terms (he did not run for reelection in 1881), and justice of the peace in Penn Township (1885-1913).[26] Additionally, he served as secretary of Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Company,[26] and on the boards of Paradise Mutual Insurance Company and Mount Olivet Cemetery.[27] He belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Free Masons, and Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church in Hanover, York County.[27]

Philip died 31 December 1913 in Hanover at age 67 due to endocarditis and peritonitis.[1] He was buried 3 January 1914 at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hanover.[28][29]
