Thomas Boyd was born in Cumberland, England.

Thomas Boyd was born in about 1770 and was christened on 21 December 1770 at Ainstable, Cumberland[1]. He was the son of John Boyd and Mary Baptiste.

At some stage he made the move from Cumberland to London, where he and 24 year old Grace Varty (the daughter of William Varty and Ann Newby) obtained a Marriage Licence on 24 March 1796. They were subsequently married on 27 March 1796 by Frederick Croker (Curate) at St Giles in the Fields, Holborn, Camden, London. Thomas was a bachelor of the parish of St. Giles in the Fields; Grace was a spinster of the same place. The witnesses were Thomas Clarke and Sarah Boyd.

They went on to have at least ten children.

His father in law William Varty died in 1814. Thomas is mentioned in his Last Will and Testament and was "of Hackney in Middx. and of Skinner Street, Snow Hill, City, Manchester Warehousemen".

On 21 July 1816 his eldest son Thomas died at about age 19.

In the 1831 UK, Poll Books and Electoral Registers (1538-1893) Thomas Boyd was a Draper of 44 Skinner Street, Snow-hill,

Thomas and his family lived at "Ward's House" in Hackney (junction of Dalston Lane and Mare Street)[2]. His wife Grace passed away at their home on 4 March 1833 at the age of 61.

Thomas was in Partnership with his two sons John Boyd and William Clark Boyd, Thomas French and William Morley Burnett as Wholesale Drapers. This firm was dissolved in 1836 as follows:

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership subsisting between the undersigned, Thomas Boyd, Thomas French, William Clark Boyd, William Morley Burnett and John Boyd, of 44, Skinner-Street, Snow Hill, in the city of London, Wholesale Drapers and Warehouseman, was this day dissolved by mutual consent (as regards the said Thomas Boyd and Thomas French retiring from the said concern); and that all debts to and from the said late co-partnership will be received and paid by the said William Clark Boyd, William Morley Burnett, and John Boyd, at Skinner-Street aforesaid; As witness our hands this 31st day of December 1836. Thomas Boyd Thomas French William Clark Boyd William Morley Burnett John Boyd.

In the 1837 London, England, Electoral Registers (1832-1965) Thomas Boyd is recorded as being of Ward's House, Hackney, a Draper.

His spinster daughter Esther Boyd died on 4 March 1838 at the age of 35, and his married son William Clark Boyd died on 21 May 1838 at the age of 38.

His daughter Hannah Louisa died on 12 July 1842 at age 31, unmarried. The following year, his married daughter Mary Anne Varty died on 6 November 1843 at age 45 due to "Effusion of Blood upon the Brain".

His (very lengthy) Last Will and Testament was dated 15 September 1846. Thomas passed away on 18 September 1846 at the age of about 75[3]. He was survived by only four of his ten children.

The following death notice was inserted on page 8 of the Morning Herald London dated 19 September 1846":

DIED.
On Friday, the 18th inst., at Ward's House, Hackney, Thos. Boyd, Esq. aged 75, after a short illness arising from disease of the heart.[4]

He was buried on 25 September 1846 at St. John at Hackney Churchyard, Hackney, London Borough of Hackney, Greater London, England[5][6].

His Will was proved on 28 October 1846 at London.
