Research Notes

February 18, 1779 “It is ordered that the Church wardens of Southam Parish bind out John Cardwell, Perrin Cardwell and Thomas Cardwell orphans of George Cardwell according to Law.” ------- This record lists the minor children of George Cardwell. Perrin Cardwell was born in 1764 (See The Family History of Rev. Perrin Cardwell by Rand Cardwell). George Cardwell is the son of Thomas Cardwell and Martha Perrin. Francis Cardwell, presumed older brother of the listed boys was living in Powhatan County at this time. Charlotte County, Virginia Deed Book 4 page 163 October 4, 1779 John Woods to Francis Cardwell. Powhatan County, Virginia Order Book 1 (1777-1784) page 80
  • Story for parents and grandparents of Richards Lee

After exhaustive research it appears that the father of Richard Lee Cardwell was Francis Cardwell, the son of George Cardwell and Letitia Lee. Francis was the grandson of Thomas Cardwell and Martha Perrin.

Several years of research by Nancy Harding of Unionville, Virginia eventually narrowed Richard's father down to two brothers; George and Francis Cardwell. George Cardwell's will was located and there was no mention of Richard Lee Cardwell in that document.

There is no known document that states that Francis Cardwell was his father. It is an assumption based on elimination of all other possible men.

Cardwell-228 and Cardwell-1440 appear to represent the same person because: Betty, I created Cardwell 1440 in 2019. Clearly its suppose to be merged with Cardwell 228. let's complete this process! :D

For the benefit of any outside party exploring this profile for any reason, I am noting additions DNA information to align this profile with Scottish connections.

Also, I have deleted the term "Family Records" from "Sources" because it did not specify which Family Records it was referring to. Additionally, if Family records are included in inline references, the term would be redundant. We can add the term Family Records to the Sources as I got lost in working with this profile and have email correspondence with the PMs, needed more confirmation of my additions and deletions. I can be hasty when excited, so If there are any issues with my edits, please contact me and I'll return the profile to its previous settings. I have notified the PMs of this profile and am working on a close collaboration with tje invested members who have worked so hard on this family.

You have Francis Cardwell listed as both half brother and son of George. It is impossible for Cardwell-1438 to be both. It is also impossible for him to be the son of Martha Perrin-33 since he was born after she died.
Cardwell-1238 and Cardwell-228 appear to represent the same person because: Dates are off a bit but have same spouse and same mother. This appears to be same person.

Cardwell-228 and Cardwell-1030 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these are the same person & George had two wives.
