Biography

Jacob Carter was born circa 1713, in the Province of North Carolina.

Jacob was the eldest son of Moore Carter and Jane Kindred. Jacob seems to have received his inheritance from his father prior to his father writing his Will. At the time of his father's death, Jacob inherits "personal property only." Calling himself "Heir at Law to Moor Carter, deceased, Jacob Carter made a give of 200 acres to his younger brother Isaac, in 1740. [1]

Jacob and his wife, Sarah were parents of the following children:

  • Janey Carter, who died prior to 1805
  • Mary Carter, who married Nathaniel Perry
  • Chrissy Carter, who married George Forman
  • Cornelius Carter, born 1739, in Edgecombe county, North Carolina, died in 1776, married Martha Whitaker, a daughter of Richard Whitaker, Sr. and Elizabeth Cary
  • Kindred Carter
  • Jacob Carter, Jr.
  • Moore Carter

Jacob died in 1797, in Nash County, North Carolina, formed in 1777 from the western part of Edgecombe County. Jacob lived on the south side of Little Turkey Creek, near the Turkey Creek Meeting House (i.e. church). Jacob's estate was finalized in November, 1805.

Research Notes

Often Conflated

This Jacob Carter (abt.1713-abt.1797) is often conflated with:

Edmond Deens

Edmond Deens by Christopher Dean
It is the common belief that Edmond was the son of Jeremiah and Molley Deens of Nash County, North Carolina. Jeremiah makes his debut into public record (the earliest that I am aware of anyway) in 1771 when he purchases 57 acres of land on the south side of Turkey Creek in Nash County from a gentleman named Cornelius Taylor. This deed is proved by the oath of a man named William Andrews. Both of these names will continue to surface in this story throughout Jeremiah’s life. The exact location of this land is not known, but it assumed to have been near Little Turkey Creek in Nash County

Oct 25, 1782: Grant from the State of North Carolina: "State of North Carolina grants to Jeremiah Deens by Gov. Alex. Martin a tract of 242 acres on Little Turkey Creek adjoining Wm Braswell, Jacob Carter, Simon Williams, Daniel Taylor, Edward Pursell."

Jul 1783; Edgecombe County, North Carolina Court Minutes: The petition of Sundry inhabitants for a road out of the New Road that leads into Andrews Road near Sampson Sikes pat thence the nearest and best way to Turkey Creek meeting house and from thence into the road to Williams Ferry. Granted. The following persons are appt to Lay of the above road agreeable to petition (to wit): Jerey Deans, Henry Deans, Daniel Taylor, Edward Pursel, Wm Braswell, Simon Williams, Richard Deans, Solomon Collins, Thomas Richard, Peter Ethridge, Willoughby Manning, Charles Brown, Dorrel Davenport, William Harris, James Moore, Jacob Carter"

Feb 3, 1797; Nash County, North Carolina Deed Book: Sherod Deans of Nash to Augustin Bass of same, for 30 pds. 219 acres on the west side of Turkey Creek adjoining Wm Braswell, Jacob Carter, Simon Williams, Jeremiah Stephens, and Elizabeth Pussel. Wit. Daniel Taylor, Willie Deans

Carter-11018 and Carter-5552 appear to represent the same person because: Same father & same wife. Differences can be disregarded because Carter-11018 has sparse information, is not sourced at all, and has conflicting information that implies impossible situations. (please see Research Notes)

You will see that Group I1-03 [I-M253] is for the Jacob Carter line of SC and has the following note by the administrator: "Note by Robert Mike Terry, Administrator: The yDNA signature of the Jacob Carter subgroup (I-M253) and the yDNA signature for the Isle of Wight Carter subgroup (R-L21)indicates there is no genetic relationship between these two respective Carter families. Any early Carter family history publications, or Ancestry trees that claim Jacob Carter of Colleton is out of the Isle of Wight line were written prior to the DNA evidence presented in this Carter yDNA project. Ignore the science at your own peril. "
