Mary Jane Chapman was born in 1839 in Kentucky to William Burgess and Mary (McClure) Chapman. When she was 18, she married her maternal first cousin, Nelson Elijah McClure, 28, of Virginia, the first marriage for both of them as noted on their marriage record. They had one child, a daughter Louisa.
It's unclear if the marriage was arranged by the family and didn't work out, or if Nelson or Mary decided to end it, however it appears to have ended sometimes after Louisa's birth, with the 1860 census showing Mary once again living at her parent's home with her young daughter Louisa.
Nelson later entered his second marriage with a woman in West Virginia (and settling there to set up a physician's practice), remained there and had many children with her. Mary then in 1864 married George Chapman Wooten, a farmer and also a paternal relative, and brought her young daughter Louisa McClure with her to their new household. Mary and George then had at least two children.
The 1900 census shows George, Mary and their son Jefferson renting a house and living in Ohio, where Jefferson later also married. George's occupation at the time of the 1900 Ohio census (when he was 60) was listed as coal miner.
George preceded Mary in death on June 1st, 1903 at the age of 63, with cause of death listed as intestinal cancer.
Mary died of pneumonia at 80 years old in the early morning hours of February 1st, 1920 at Hellier, Pike, Kentucky.
